Front axle breather location

I just changed axle and T-case fluid on the truck. 50k miles on these fluids. The rear axle and T-case fluids looked almost new. Very little metal accumulated on the rear locker sensor magnet or fill plug magnet. I was surprised by how good it looked in there.
The front was a different story. Broke loose the last bolt on the bottom of the cover and water started dribbling out. The oil was dark and just to be sure the water wasn’t trapped on the outside of the gasket I cooked some of the oil. Sure enough, water in the front axle. Not having leaks anywhere on the front axle, the only place it could have gone in is the breather tube. The connection at the axle was tight, so I followed it up (I’d never put any thought into where it goes since I don’t take the wagon swimming on purpose). Wouldn’t you know Ram put the end of the breather in about the dumbest place they could put it aside from on the axle itself. Go through a deep hole and cool the axle off, breather sucks in some air and gets water from the freaking wheel well. Brilliant.

Has anybody relocated their front axle breather, have any good suggestions for where to put it?

Just extensing it further up under the hood would have to do the trick.

Did you happen follow the rear axle breather tube and see where it terminates? It isnt any higher.

I relocated both of mine to higher positions using new tubing.

Anyone know where the breather for the trans is? The older dodges it was inside the bellhousing and you’d have to pull the trans to add a vent hose, is the vent in the same spot on the new trucks?

On the 3rd gens at least, it’s on top of the trans where the bellhousing meets the case.

Breather for the trans on my 15 is on top with a hose. I looked to make sure my vent wasn’t clogged causing my trans dipstick to continually push up and out of tube which it still does today.

When you extent the vent line. Put a loop in it at the end if you can. This will act like a loop seal. It will let it vent but keeps crap out.

Do breathers and a loop if at all possible. I’ve had axles and drivetrain parts push fluid up non looped breather hoses and cause spills. Potential fire hazard that’s easily avoided

Evaluate vent is an interesting one, forgot about that entirely. Interesting because the fuel tank gets warm form running with the bypass fuel running a circuit through the engine, you could definitely suck water in due to the fuel cooling and contracting.
