Can anyone tell me the "whereabouts" of the campground that we are all meeting/staying? I think it will be announced like 2 weeks before the event? But can anyone tell me if its South of Moab?? North of Moab?? East? west of Moab? etc. I usually stay along the Co river near the PSM trail head, or at the trail head of Pritchett' Canyon or at the Back door to Shaffers Switchbacks. I am just trying to get an idea of distances etc.if I decide to camp in another area other than the PW designated camping area.

Thanks

To give you an idea of the space, the section on the side of the road where the photo taken is a bit larger. My Airstream is 27ft (center), Aarons is 31ft and I believe Mike down at the other end had a 32ft TT. There is A LOT of room. So the location is kept on the DL so that it's not taken.

Anyone attending this event that are rock climbers (as opposed to rock crawlers) ? I try to hit up some walls along PSM and along the PCT.

If so, let me know, and bring your gear, will have to get together at some point before, during, after the event and tackle some climbs.

Fullsize Invasion is running 46 trucks up Moab Rim today. Whoa! They’re going to let me know how it goes.

This is part of why we have the dates we have. Past two years Moab has been mostly empty and we have lucked out on the trails by being after Easter Jeep Safari and Before Rally on the Rocks.

I have been wanting to attend Fullsize Invasion but I can’t imagine Moab right now with Easter Jeep Safari going on. Place has got to be a mad house.

It sucks that the fastest route would be the most boring. The 19hrs 30 mins would be more scenic.

Not since 2009, and I don't have any gear anymore. :( I've lost 41lbs so far, almost to my goal of 50lbs. I'd like to eventually get back into this. Have a buddy who is a climber. But I dunno, been so long, best I could tackle is like 5.4  I bet ReloaderGuy would recognize this spot.

Fullsize Invasion went up Moab Rim, this trail is going to be a blast. Also, two Rams in their group. A classic Power Wagon too boat.

We will be running this trail on Tuesday!

Have a looky

ALRIGHT, So ANNOUNCEMENT. The BLM caught up with us, and are making some serious demands because of the group size. Moab wanting a permit was bad enough, they want a permit and insurance. And some other BS.

So, there is not "pre-party" and no "after-party" that's just friends doing whatever they want. Nothing official.

Second, we won't be providing steaks or any food for the potluck on the overnight trip. Becuase, food safety laws.

We will probably change the give away to a raffle to go towards the insurance fund. Ugh.

Re: MOAB 2018 - CANCELLED

Post by OffroadTreks » Wed Mar 28, 2018 2:33 pm

ALRIGHT, that seals the deal. The BLM's demands were absurd to the 10th level. We sent out a general email. But "officially" the event is CANCELLED.

I took off time and go to Moab every year. I'll be around. If you want to meet up and hang out. Hint Hint. ;) I posted the FULL STORY into the FIRST POST, please go read it.

Sorry folks, but apparently, any level of organization, including posting on a forum with the intent of having an event, in Moab, requires permits, insurance, and a FUCK LOAD of user fees according to the BLM.

They are not playing around. So, apparently, we all got away with it every previous year. This is my fault for making the event even more organized and professional looking. For that, I'm sorry.

BLM can pound sand. Y’all enjoy your unplanned, unorganized, unnamed weekend of wheeling in Moab. I hope you happen to bump into some like minded truck enthusiasts and enjoy the trails in small groups.

You know what would be strange is if people started getting shirts in the mail sometime in mid-May for an event that got cancelled and never happened. That’d be real strange.

No beating around the bush, I’ll be there 7-14 days. Organized, disorganized, I’m there for my company to test prototypes. I expect to see the same exact group there that registered because they’ve already got vacations scheduled and trucks prepped.

I'll see if damagewagon would like a hand testing prototypes in that approximate time frame in that approximate area

What we did in the past was plan a vacation as a group in Moab. We never really discussed or planned trails ahead of the time. We would talk about the many trails and the awesomeness, but we would never officially plan ahead. We would meet up in Moab and only there we would suggest and on the fly decide if we wanted to go on the trails. It was always a very lax way we went about it in the past. No real planning, people could go about whatever on there own and if they wanted to, they would buddy up into a group. And because of the way we went about it, there was no need to jump through hoops. Everyone was on their own. We just happened to follow the leader.

From talking around to others who organize different runs during EJS, it appears the BLM is cracking down this year. They are hassling lots of groups, even if you did that today, they'd probably try to hassle you as well. Seems like they want their cut of the money. I've got a little verification from the Utah 4WD Association that groups over a size of 10 are considered "organized" - but the BLM seems to be tight-lipped and just picking and choosing.

I think they saw the website, and thought we had sponsors, and thus MONEY.

When ever some of us would go on the trails, it never came close to 10 vehicles.

I posted the full numbers on the Alumni group, but the insurance is only one minor problem. The permit wasn't bad itself, but then on top of that is an expected user fee, PER PERSON on the trail, not per vehicle, of $5. Age doesn't matter. So for me, that's $25 dollars a day. Most likely for a lot of people like GTOMike, that's $10 per day. A lot of people have spouses or friends and a few have kids with them. We've got people coming from Canada and Maine already spending thousands in gas money.

For me that' $175 for a 7-day event. So, really it became ABSURD fast. Actually, it's outright theft. Also, let's think about the absurdity and burden of asking me to collect this money and be accountable for all of. Figure out who is on the trail each day etc. Their email actually said they wanted an "attendance count and fee schedule"

It's additional burdens on the group and typical government BS. I have no problem respecting or getting a permit. But the additional requirements, I think are completely ridiculous. Especially the "user fees" - if we go as individuals, then suddenly there are no fees? WTF?

Dave over at American Adventusit apparently got hassled too this year for their event. And those guys bring a dumpster to their event and pick up trash.

But he made a good comment, "Not all gates to public lands are made of steel."
