I guess I won't openly discuss removing the bed for a custom flatbed with the nerd patrol.

No, please do! Offroad flatbeds are one of the coolest things ever. I’ve been considering it for mine for a couple years now.

And the longer you keep that depreciating asset on your books the less it matters  .

Precisely. Eventually most passenger vehicles have an asset value close to zero. Will you keep it one year or 10 years?

If you are the type of person who gets a new vehicle every few years. Any mods you do are useless for the resale price. Because you will never get out out of what you put in. If you keep the vehicle until the wheels fall off. Then yeah. Do your mods, and enjoy.

I would love to do 40's on my 3G. But to do it will be $$$$. Body work, suspension work may be more then what I want to do. Plus 5.13's for regearing. For that, think I would have to use the 11.5 rear end out of a 5G. :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash:

...
^^^^^^ exactly

If you're trading in, dealers aren't going to give extra value for mods - they prefer vehicles as close to stock as possible. Having to warranty the mods is a liability - highly modded vehicles often go off to auction.

When you're in the market for a truck, do you look for one with lots of mods - or one that's new or stock? I'm sure the answer varies by person.

I don't us my PW that often, I'll probably trade it in for a new PW with the original tires still on it some time in 2020-2022 - assuming they're still making the PW and its not a 6 cylinder. All vehicles in this area start turning into rust buckets once they are approaching 10 years old. :jawdrop:

I resemble that remark. I don’t use my PW much here, aside from the weekend hunting trips—it’s DC, they frown on that type of behavior ;) —so it’s neither a mall crawler nor my DD, but it’s been paid off for about a year now, so it’s my depreciating asset, no one else’s, & I’ll keep it at least 10yrs, hopefully double.

Anyway, If 40’s up the coolness factor, go for it. Shit, remove the bed & add the flatbed, and now you’re a full-on AEV prospector, & we all know how cool they are! :poke:

EDIT: I think doing manual hubs and a hydro-assist steering set-up would really be nearly mandatory if going to 40's, and you're planning to keep your PW enlisted as a DD.

Well, remember, I opened this thread by saying you can do this the right way, or half-assed way. There are a few guys, who aren't around these parts who have moved to 40's. One 3rd gen guy... well his front end lasted a year and a half. And the funny part, he claimed it wasn't the 40's. He "loaned it to a buddy" ugh huh.

So we can discuss both methods. I mean technically, a Sawzall and some wheels and you're done. We can debate the merits and how long it will hold up.

Well, a brake upgrade is a must! the stock 4th gen brakes are just barely adequate with the 33's. Attempting to stop quickly on the highway with stock brakes and 40-inch tires would be downright dangerous.

If you say so. :poke: I haven't found that to be the case. But I do have upgraded pads and rotors. But there is always room for improvement. I haven't done it on this rig. But on our Trailblazer build, I upgraded the rotor size and calipers. I've been looking at these, and the caliper is so close... But there is the possibility with a bigger wheel of perhaps fabbing something. I'd love to see something like a 4-piston or 6-piston conversion with a 15-inch rotor. We have a 14.170-inch rotor currently. It's interesting, that RAM just moved the 2019 Ram 1500 to a 14-inch rotor. There might be larger rotors coming to the 2500. Possibly...

I wish someone would make freaking 2014+ off the shelf braided lines, that would be a huge improvement as well. As far as I can tell, no one does. Or you have to call and get some custom made. I dunno. Can't find them.

But check this out, it's made for earlier F250s, talk about rotor/caliper envy!! :jawdrop: I WISH this company would do this for RAM.

It's not a claim, it's what happened. The U-joints went out while he was driving it and he continued to drive it which ruined both inner and outer axle shafts.

The axle held up to the 40's just fine. In the long run my buddy helped me do a bunch of upgrades to the truck.

It's got chromoly axle shafts up front, 5.38 gears, rear axle swap to a 11.5 with an ARB, hydraulic assist steering..... a couple more other small mods and some more maintenance.

I've been very happy with the truck and even more so with the gears. I drove it today for the first time since starting all the work. I'm now waiting on the new beadlocks to get delivered all the way to Alaska.
2006 Power Wagon, 40" Pro Comp MT2's, 5.38 gears, 11.5 rear axle with an arb, DV8 beadlocks..... located in Alaska

The different generations have pluses and minuses but the 14+ front end is much stronger than older trucks. Ball joints, rod ends, U Joints, unit bearings, and RA joints should all survive adequately. My short list for what it's going to take to reliably run 40's after a complete 3"+ lift is axle truss, rewelded front shock brackets, hydro assist, 4.88 or lower gears, 1" bump stop drop, wheels with 5.5" of BS, and a sawzall/fender kit.

Yes. Well said. For the most part I very much like the new front axles and a little work to them makes them awesome. They shouldn’t have let a summer intern design the shock mounts.

I can’t believe someone would actually cut up their truck that much. The end result looks terrible.

That's awesome that they can shove 40's on a non-lifted truck - Keeps the COG low which is always a plus

But that is an ugly looking result IMO

It's an interesting concept but the execution is completely hack. The install was absolutely aweful, look at the paint they ran the sawzall into cutting out the cab. They didn't bother even cleaning the adhesive from the flares off.
