whats the truss for. one of the magazines was jumping a pw and didnt mention any problem
Yeah there’s never a problem when:
- it’s free
- you don’t have to maintain it
- you don’t have it long enough to know you completely fucked the axle

The new trucks can’t take the beating the older trucks could, the front axle is 5 distinct sections and can bend easily. The older trucks bent front axles all the time I’m really hard hits but they could take a lot more and could be bent back. You don’t even have to get air in the new trucks to bend them. I can almost guarantee the axle on that Power Wagon is way bent. The truss is to keep the axle straight and prevent bending and works crazy well.

do you have any links to threads about bent axles ? google search is only showing '10 and earlier but nothing for '14+

Look on cummins forum for axle threads. You can find them all day long. Or talk with Paul at CJC Offroad, ask if he thinks your truck has risk if you push it hard.

In regards to bent axles, is this pretty much only occurring with hard contact to the bump stops or are folks bending the axle without such a hard hit?

It depends, Canadian trucks come prebent.

Majority of the time it's due to the hard hit on the bump stops. Rare occasions it's a failure on the plug weld from heavy articulation, locked, and in a turn.

In theory, would using hydraulic bump stops help prevent that sort of damage?

Probably not, hydro bumps can be aggressive. But you’re on a good line. Boogie Bumps do help because they’re a much smoother engagement than stock or hydro bumps.

Or you could just weld a truss to your front axle for the same cost.

Or you can weld the tube into the housings if you don't foresee a massive hit in the future. You can add a truss at a later date if you feel the need to.

From what I gather this isn't an operation to be carried out by a novice with a 110v mig machine? In order to weld the tubes are you guys removing the axle completely? If welding in the truck are you removing all gear oil or taking any other precautions (aside from very common sense stuff like protecting electrical lines etc.)?

It’s best to have a 220v MIG but I had to turn my settings down to keep from blowing material out. The welds are nice fillet joints. I do know someone who welded a truss on with a 115v Lincoln and it’s held haha. You don’t need to change the oil (it doesn’t get that hot). I also don’t remove the axle from the truck, it isn’t hard to weld in place and I like having the truck weight on itfor 03-13 trucks since they require preloading the truss.

if im not going to party would welding the tubes to the housing be sufficient? i wanted to get to 15K or so miles before i modify the axle. if i could just weld the tubes, fab supports for the Cs and reinforce the shock mounts, i would do that at 15k along with the balljoints.

why do i not see drag link and tie rod upgrades? 2014+ ram 2500 are satisfactory?

Have you ever heard the expression “just the tip”? Everyone wants to believe they can just do just a little bit of something that feels amazing. It’s never just the tip. Ever. Truss your axle if you’re going to throw that suspension under your truck. Don’t kid yourself, you’re going to party. It’s pretty cheap and easy to prevent major damage and it’s extremely expensive to repair it.

I’m with Colibri. Truss it. You’re getting 3.0’s, it’s going to be SO EASY to get yourself in a spot where you look at your speedo and you’re going 80mph through the rough. Truss it, they bend easily. Guessetting the ‘C’s is only necessary if the axle is trussed, the ‘C’s are the last thing to bend. Thuren includes C gussets with his kit.

I’ll probably be making some weld-on shock mount gussets for Reloaderguy and can make some extra sets if you want. Those front lower mounts are garbage.

The steering setup on your truck is the best option out there, but I do wish there was a stronger drag link option.

ok truss it is!

deciding on doing the balljoints along with it.

i will certainly pay you a fee for some of your weld on gussets. send over a picture of his mounts so i can be 100% confident they are identical, if you decide to proceed.
