Good places to move to in the southwest

Post by RustyPW » Sun Feb 25, 2018 5:27 pm

Me and the wife have been talking about moving out to the southwest. Looking for a state with no taxes on retirement income. Not too hot, not too cold. Grass and trees. No emissions on vehicles and low yearly registration. Not based on value. Basically a Goldilocks zone.

We live in Westcliffe Colorado. Not sure about retirement taxes, but this is the best place we have ever lived. The climate is great, views are amazing, plenty to do and the people are wonderful. No smog, no traffic, cheaper real estate, and only about 4000 people in the county. We are also in the top 10 in the nation for dark skies at night if you like astronomy.

Colorado, You pay taxes on retirement income. Don't know about vehicle plates.

Mid stepson is in Greeley now. He's buying a place in Elizabeth. Youngest stepson has a place outside of Farmington NM. We're looking for a place just outside of a town. Where I can go hunting off the back porch.

Well, I can hunt off the back porch. I have a herd of 30 mule deer almost daily. I wasn't sure about the taxes, but for us as retired military, the bennies are good. Good luck with your search. Trust me, if you look, you can find heaven on earth. We happened on our area by pure chance this time last year. Now the only way I am moving away is in a box. And being military, I have lived in way too many places.

I was going to say northern NM. Between Santa Fe and Colorado somewhere. I'm just east of Abq and love it out here. Originally from eastern PA. We're in the mountains but not too far from (what some people call) civilization.

My youngest stepson is just outside of Farmington. Been up to Chama. Camped there with the motorhome. Love that place in the summer time. But in the winter. It would cost a ton to heat a home there. Plus the snow is measured in yards, not inches.

Take a look at Prescott AZ. In the mountains near Phoenix, but high enough (4500' ?)to stay relatively cool in summer. Gets a little snow in winter but usually not enough to be a problem. Close enough to Phoenix that you can get to the big city if you want to. If I could convince wifey to leave CA, it would be to Prescott or Carson City NV.

Prescott climate is a lot like Albuquerque’s. It get hot in summer, but not furnace-like 115-120 peak like Phoenix and south of Phoenix get. North of that is Chino valley, Paulden etc. Not so convenient to Phoenix but probably less expensive.
