Tube Bumpers and OEM Winch Positioning

Post by NickTF » Mon Feb 12, 2018 1:39 pm

https://www.realtruck.com/n-fab-m-rds-p ... gLsRPD_BwE

So I measured and it looks like the bumper above would place the bottom opening area of the bumper about 1/2" to 1/4" lower than the fairlead of the oem winch setup on my 2015. I'm thinking that's going to result in some wear on the finish of the lower tube. Perhaps I could find an expendable tubular wear sleeve I could fasten to the lower tube? Compared to the price of most of these bumpers the price of this bumper is attractive. Not a big fan of the white screens (can option them black) or the brushed aluminum skid plate (would paint or coat black). Aside from having to replace the front tow rings with shackle mounts offset toward the center (the bumper opening is about 40" long which won't allow oem tow rings to be used), what else am I missing that would cause this bumper to interfere with the OEM winch setup? Just brain storming, not in any rush at all. May consider finding someone local to help jig up something similar and take care of the finish welding myself and have someone coat it with linex or another similar durable finish.

I have a custom tube bumper on my 3rd gen, based off of Patton fab frame horns. It’s got tremendous approach angle and very high clearance. I had to trim part of my winch cradle up front to tuck it inside the skid plate though. I suspect it’s a similar issue on the newer trucks as well. If you can weld, you can get frame horns and diy the rest or get together with creative fab works or pattonfab to make something for your truck. Would cost less and work better probably. Mercenary off-road and thuren make some very nice high clearance front bumpers as well. I know the thuren bumper can be modified to accept the power wagon winch cradle without to much trouble. There’s a guy on here who did it already

Colibri, thanks. Clearance and approach are what i'm after. I also love the look of having the tire near fully exposed. The thuren bumper has always been my favorite option; however, at $1700 plus i'd need to modify it i'm just looking to see what else is out there. These fab'd bumpers are insane in cost imho but i'm sure it takes time to make one and that's what the cost is for no doubt. I'll check out those fab options. Thanks.

No problem, I know what you mean about cost. The pattonfab is 1000 if I remember correctly. Probably the cheapest tube style out there and it’s still expensive lol.

Tig welded frame horns are like 300 bucks. Maybe you could get those and perhaps the main hoop prebent from one of the fab shops and then complete the rest yourself? Save a ton of money that way.

That’s the route I went with my truck because no one makes a tube style bumper for us power wagons, and I didn’t want to pay a bunch of money for something I was going to have to cut up and reweld anyway lol.

Any idea where I can find the dimple skins like this in various shapes and configurations? I like them for the sides like in this Rogue bumper.

Premade? Nope. But a set of dimple dies can be had pretty inexpensively if you only need one or two diameters and want to diy.

That's a Rogue Racing bumper. They make one for Ram 2500 with either mesh or the dimple holes. They call them side skins.

Emailed them yesterday. Nick indicated that rebel is no longer made for the 4th gen truck. They're exploring making the enforcer version which is currently made for the gm and ford hd trucks. I really like the enforcer on those trucks but the cost goes up to fricken $2000 and I just can't see myself spending that kind of money for a bumper.

I need to resize these photos. This is the hybrid bumper I’m working on. There’s going to be a lot of small changes and will be a full bull bar option. Mounts to the frame with a 1” laser cut recovery point, leaves winch in stock location and sits so tight that it doesn’t need a second fairlead even for extreme angles. Center is 3/16” formed plate, tube is massive 2.0”x.250” DOM. Will have light mounts in the wings. Sits as tight to the frame and winch as it possibly can without causing problems.

Thanks Tim! I have a lot of small changes I want to make to make it look cleaner and I need to finish the bull bar. Once I catch a break from production here I’ll get the next version of it out.

Very cool damagewagon. If I decide to fab or partially fab I could only hope to execute as nicely. More pics of your bumper are encouraged!

Here's the thing, this POS doesn't even look like it was designed on our trucks...

More like they designed it to fit a few trucks and bent it a little bit for each make/model.

Image

Image

I don't understand why most of the bumpers out there are so piss poorly designed or so generic looking. Or worse, BRUH looking.

Image

This is one of the reasons I was so disappointed with the whole endeavor with my bumper. What a shame.

Other than Marcus, the only two bumpers that look like someone actually mounted them to our trucks while building them is Thuren and Mercenary. But Mercenary's bumper is aptly named. Miss piggy, because it's fugly IMO. Their 3rd gen bumper looks a lot better, but they tried carrying that design forward and it doesn't work at all.

I got invited to a facebook truck site and when I quickly figured out it was bro truck groupy ville I decided to share the above and make it a point to point out bro truck isms. I knew it was a quality group when I put videos up of my old 97 12v cummins truck making bottom 12 second passes and mid 12-second passes on 35" mud tires on 16" wheels, videos which were followed by their videos of boost gauges and threatening to "own me" with triple turbo setups that were yet to be and thought sponsored by meth and pixie dust. You guys owe it to yourself to join a bro truck group for a few days, it's enlightening!
