37" spare locations

Post by Easttnrhino » Mon Feb 12, 2018 2:19 pm

Wonder what all options there are for 37" spare tire location. I understand a 35" will fit under truck (have not tried but that is what I read, got to be tight though) does it help to do away with heat shield? I saw reloader's Wilco carrier and I like also like Wilco tailgate replacement spare tire carrier. Damage wagon has hinted at a rear bumper with the room for a 37" under the truck. All have goods and bads, looking for ideas. Thanks
Enjoying beautiful east TN

The tailgate tire carrier can damage your bed if you use your truck offroad at speed. Otherwise it’s made well. Strapt offroad also has an in bed tire carrier that’s pretty simple and nice

Other than toting it around in the bed or on one of those rear gate/roof carriers, there really is no other option.

Maybe against the grill like back in the day lol.

The 35 will fit if you guide it into position, have it deflated to around 18psi and have a second-hand help to tighten it up while you forcefully hold it in place. No need to remove the exhaust shield.

As for tire locations, I am working on something like this for in my bed and under the cover. NFab makes a solution, I'm looking to place mine at a slight angle, has to be below bed rail, but angled to conserve some space. And put the high lift and jack under the tire. Then my gas cans on each side.

Nutzo Industries makes a tire carrier shelf that is removable. It floats above your bed and attaches to their rack. It can support up to a 40" tire I believe. Leaves the bed free for whatever you want. Don't know how it affects CoG though.

I'd much prefer something like this that allows for bed space while also carrying a spare.

Simple e-tracks and straps. I'll likely run it standing up on the side (in front of the drivers side wheel well) or staying up flat against the bulkhead on the drivers side now that I am running a shell full-time.

There was a guy at PWIM with one of those. He said they were great to work with.

I strap mine in the bed, with the inner side of the wheel facing up. Place a moving blanket inside it and a full size 2.5 Ton floor jack in the center and then strap the assembly down at the front of the bed. It doesn’t move and it gives me a full size spare and a real jack and a blanket to work under the truck with.

There isn’t a great way to carry a 37” spare. Every option has serious downsides.

Wilco universal flat bed mount is a cheap option, and sturdy design. you can mount it with some flexibility in the bed, but i shoved mine as close to the cab as possible.
