Exhaust Help

A while back i put the Magnaflow 19200 system on my 2016 Laramie. Old system is long gone. It has a drone that is driving me nuts. It's only in a certain RPM range but it's at highway cruising speed. Any ideas on what to do? I love the sound except when it drones. I'm even willing to go back to the dealership and have them restore the factory system at this point. Any ideas short of that? Original goal was to get rid of the trashcan look of the original resonator.

I would think you could have an exhaust shop weld in another resonator somewhere but when I looked at that 19200 it appeared to already have a front and rear (resonator?) with not much space for anything else.

Yeah it has a muffler in front and a resonator in the rear before the axle. Not sure about anymore room though...

I'm really surprised you have a drone with that system. I have a Magnaflow 12589 (http://amzn.to/2xCjAeP) muffler with no resonator and zero drone.

Funny how drone and exhaust tone are a personal preference. Some are very sensitive to it. I've had really loud, rock the block type exhaust and now I prefer a nice quiet mellow tone with zero drone. I only have the mufflex muffler replacement and that's almost too loud for me with the constant shifting under power. If Ram would've used 4.56 gearing it wouldn't be so bad.

I can understand tankerzak wanting to return to stock.

I totally understand the need for quiet performance exhaust. Tomorrow I have an appointment for my 3rd muffler on my 07. I bought this thing with 80000 miles, and it came with a chambered thrush muffler like a flowmaster 40 series. Way too loud, especially when towing. Replaced it with a generic turbo style muffler that is disintegrating because of vibration from offroad. After seeing how the crimped metal is coming apart, I am going to try a flowmaster 70 series. I tow a lot, drive off pavement a lot, so we'll see how it goes. It has to have zero drone.

The Magnaflow muffler on the 19200 is most likely the problem, being too small for him. I have a 22-inch so it's actually smaller than the 14-inch I had on my 1500 which had a tad touch of drone. We basically have the same muffler setup.

However, the muffler is significantly smaller than the factory, and I still have 3.5-inch tubing were that 19200 is 4-inches. I would look into maybe either replacing the whole system or getting a larger Magnaflow, they make a larger 24 inch and 28-inch body unit that should knock down the sound and drone some more.

I do wonder if it's the sizing of the exit piping since I have the same size Magnaflow and have no drone. I've had plenty of loud as ball exhausts, and I'm pretty familiar with an annoying drone.

Its really bad between like 1500 and 2k rpms. Rest of the time it's fine. And its NOT when the MDS kicks in. I can shift into 6th and or use tow haul mode and it still does it.

I calles magnaflow and they mentioned replacing the 6x14 resonator with a 7x14 resonator. I also called a muffle shop and he mentioned adding a Flopro Twister additional resonator in front of the muffler. Any thoughts on either of these?

Magnaflow also said the 19200 has the largest muffler they make. The resonator can go up one size.

Okay, well I've decided to put a Flo Pro Twister 5x23 in between the y-pipe and the Magnaflow muffler. Guess I'll see what happens if i can find the part in stock anywhere.

That's definitely going to help. No need to rip the entire exhaust off unless there's just no space for a resonator.

I want to know how to get rid of my big ass rock crawler tire drone lol. If I roll down the windows that's all I can hear.

I had Toyo M/Ts on my diesel. They definitely had a hum to them that could be heard in the cab. Toyo RTs have no sound. Can't hear them at all. It's actually making the exhaust sound worse because nearly everything else is silent... cab is fairly well insulated.

Yeah my next set will definitely be RT's. Interestingly enough I rode in a friends truck with Toyo MT's and they were quieter than my Cooper STT Pro's which are supposed to be a low noise MT! They were fine until around 10k miles then became annoying as hell. I kinda knew it was coming once they had some miles on them. They grip like a monkey offroad but here's just no getting around those huge tread voids...if i drove everywhere under 50 mph it would be no problem.

Thing I like about swampers is if you are waiting to meet a rig somewhere and they have Swampers you can hear them 20 Minutes away. Better then FRS.

Just for an update. I selected a Pro Flo Twister F5 with a 12 inch body (17 overall) to go on my Magnaflow 19200 between the y-pipe and the muffler. I'm getting it installed next week. After extensive research and speaking with both manufacturers (who actually agreed) and the muffler shop guy this seems like a great idea. It should eliminate the cab drone and damped the sound some with leaving a full straight through performance exhaust. Twister is interesting as it spins the exhaust to use its own throughput to cancel out the frequencies.

I just got it installed today. It's definitely quieter. It's a lot better. Not sure if its better enough yet. Power feels the same, mpg is the same, need to get Fiance input...

I will say its quieter and at least the specific drone range is smaller and lower rpm. Its no longer at 65-70 mph. Looks clean and glad I did it.
