Air conditioning leak
Air conditioning leak
My AC is barely cooling, compressor still kicks in and it appears everything is working correctly so I must have a small leak. I see I can get a recharge kit but I also see there's a bunch of them and some have "sealant" in them. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm thinking just recharge it and if it last a short while, then do the UV check but if it'll seal it, is that like "fix a flat" or snake oil or what?

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Re: Air conditioning leak
Are you certain it's not a blend door issue? Dodge trucks are notorious for it (at least 3rd gen) a blend door can take a shit and leave it only blowing hot air even though the ac works fine

Re: Air conditioning leak
How plugged up is the ac condenser. Have you ever cleaned it out? Dust and bugs can cause similar symptoms you're describing. Blend door.... i doubt you've adjusted the tempature to heat in the last few months so I doubt that could be it. If you had a leak then the compressor would eventually not turn on at all once pressure got too lowWill wrote:My AC is barely cooling, compressor still kicks in and it appears everything is working correctly so I must have a small leak. Re: Air conditioning leak
^^^What they said^^^ and...
An A/C clutch cycling on and off too quickly would be one of the first indicators of low freon. If you add freon to a system that doesn't need it, you could overcharge it and create other problems
There's also an orifice tube with a screen/filter inside the high pressure line that can get restricted and effect performance, but that usually happens when something is coming apart internally (compressor shrapnel).
Any kind of sealant/stop leak is usually a solvent based chemical that softens old, hard rubber seals. The problem is that eventually it softens the seal so much that it loses it's integrity and blows out completely. And it doesn't just work on the one seal or O-ring that's leaking, it softening all of them in the system. I'm not a fan of "stop leak/snake oil", especially if you're planning on keeping the rig for the long haul. Find the leak and fix it right (if it's a leak).
Glad to hear you're still alive after Irma!

Re: Air conditioning leak
I'll dive into it a little more but I'm thinking there is a leak because the compressor runs like it should and the low pressure side just gets cool, not cold enough to sweat, high pressure is slightly warm, not hot. I am skeptical about those stop leak cans so I'll do the UV check and hopefully find the leak. One thing I noticed about a month ago is when you do turn on the AC it stinks like a dirty rag. I've been riding with the AC on max and the windows down trying to clear it out.

Re: Air conditioning leak
Check to make sure your drain hose is open. Because of the smell you are describing. Makes me think that it's not working, and your evaporator needs cleaning from the mold build-up on it.

Re: Air conditioning leak
If you end up doing a rebuild you may as well buy a vacuum and pressure manifold plus leak die. HF is a good source for cheap diagnostic tools that you will likely only use once. As mentioned, you will need to check the high pressure screen (I don't know it's real name). If you lost charge pressure you likely have another problem that will eventually resurface (slow leak from crack, bad seal, etc).
Re: Air conditioning leak
No doubt it has a leak, after these 90F days go by I'll see what the problem is and fix it. For now it's cooling on a recharge.

Didn't last long, evaporator coil leaking. I'm just about ready to sell this truck now.

Re: Air conditioning leak
There's not much left to upgrade on your truck haha. You're probably running out of major problems to fix.
Re: Air conditioning leak
Yeah, good point. But what's next? More horsepower and start stripping it down to make lighter or sell as already set up for whatever. It's not daily driver any more so either play or.... ?DamageWagon wrote:There's not much left to upgrade on your truck haha. You're probably running out of major problems to fix.
