Progressive vs Linear ? Not sure that would explain it the more I think about it, but don't know.

The way progressive rate was always explained to me, if a linear spring compresses 1 inch for 100lbs of load and 2 inches for 200lbs of load, then a progressive rate would compress 1 inch for 100lbs, then 1.5 inches for 200lbs then 2 inches for 300lbs and get stiffer as more weight is added.

Dunno, just totally guessing.

Yea, I guess that would play a role in overall height when loaded, too.

I agree, I misqouted. He meant the rears. We're talking about the fronts. Sorry about stating that.

You may not be able to see from the photos (I was snapping them with the phone while working) is that the Thuren .5 spring is SHORTER than the stock spring. Not by much, but it's indeed shorter. Also the coils are thicker which, like NTS said would 'stack' quicker than the stock coils. That was the reasoning behind my original retarded post :) .

The Thuren springs are probably a higher rate. It feels like they are. There is less roll through corners. However they RIDE better, soaking up anything more a small bump very effectively. I will say they are very well engineered. I think these coils were designed primarily for the diesel guys who get beat to death with the stock suspension and want a better ride, then tweaked for hemi/gas truck use.

Great, go take some flex shots, lol. Put our minds to rest.

Wait, if they're .5 shorter, what happens if I get the 1.5-inch springs?

Ha! Good question. I didn't measure before I installed the springs. Kinda kicking myself for not but it was 100 degrees yesterday and I wanted to get it done quickly. I completely forgot and trusted thuren's statement about the .5''.

I would approximate an inch of lift? I'm thinking I should have just gone with the 1.5's. Now that i know how frigging easy it is to swap the springs on this truck I'll probably buy some.

My guess is, since his website states it, that the .5" springs gain just that in height, and the 1.5" springs gain just that. Regardless of overall unloaded height.

So, if the pw springs are longer unloaded, does that essentially mean they could have more down travel than Thurens?

Not quite. More like 2". My 1.5" spacers still leave the back a 1/2" higher.

Dons coils are linear though from what I read. Unless I read wrong. Honestly the wagon has an amazing amount of travel and softness in its springs. Most of the time he compares to stock 2500 systems

Back to your regularly scheduled programming of what tires should I buy, why won't my lockers work and what upgrade should I do first ;).

Yeah, I posted in another thread about the front level kit, that when I un-boxed my 1.5 springs I thought they had sent me the .5 inch springs, because they were the same height as stock... magically it lifted the front 1.5 inches..... My take is they are softer to a point, once compressed to a certain lenght they are stiff as stock..... only have the overland shock so until I upgrade I dont think I take full advantage of the better rate. probably gonna try his rear spring and longer track bar....

Diameter of the steel, type of alloy, temper, number of turns/coils, and total height will yield different results and appearance.

I have an inch of rake at static unloaded ride with Thuren 3" front and Thuren 1" rear. With the truck cap, bed system, spare, and carrier I am perfectly level (500lb in the bed and 300lb on the tongue). No one actually makes a Hemi rear coil so they are a little taller than spec. The factory rear coils are even taller still. If you're getting custom valved shocks buy rear coils, otherwise leave the stock rear coils on the truck.

There you go making sense. And I get that but don't see how some travel is lost in a shorter length spring with tighter wound, larger diameter coils. Maybe I'm way off base. If so I do apologize for wasting your time

In a rough sense, the minimum compressed length of a coil spring is: ( diameter of the coil ) X ( number of coils). A spring with the same number of smaller diameter coils can compress farther - until all the coils are touching at "coil bind height".

Or for exact coil spring calculations - check out this site:

Factory coils won't coil bind before the axle's up-travel is limited by the bump stops.

Correct. If you hit coil bind with Thurens springs, something else is horribly wrong. Thuren and Carli are running linear rate springs as far as I'm aware on the newer trucks so... The only way a shorter spring is going to add effective lift height, is by being stiffer. As said before, 20% softer than factory 2500 is probably stiffer than Wagon springs. Sometimes a stiffer spring feels good. I was surprised how nicely a stock 2500 rode on the street a week ago.

I don't think Thuren's coils are 20% lighter than PW coils but I don't know that for sure. That would make them, what, 40% lighter than a standard 2500? That doesn't sound right. My Thuren front coils feel like stock. I sure wouldn't go replacing the stock fronts with Thuren's Hemi leveling coils (that's what the .5's are), I don't know what you'd gain besides the imperceptible .5" of lift. If you're after a PW leveling, the 3" coils are perfect, otherwise you already have an improved ride over a stock 2500. You get a better ride improvement from a tire with more sidewall.

Thanks guys. I'm glad I was able to provide some amusement. Now the question is why didn't I get my 1/2 of lift??? :-).

The Thuren coils are a definite improvement in ride quality over the stock PW coils. I can unequivocally state that after driving on them for two days. They are so much of an improvement that the rear is glaringly harsh now. I cannot wait to install the rears. If the rears are even slightly lower to bring the rake to 1.5'' I'll be thrilled with the setup until I can swing thurens king dampers.
