Mike,
I read in another forum where you wished you had known about the Magnaflow 12909. Is it because it was a 3.5" In/Out?

While on the topic of exhaust, has anyone considered going with a true dual set up? (2.5" pipe/muffler from the cats to the back)

Ok...I have a 2011 with 5.7. I want to do something like you guys have done....get nicer muffler and dump before the axle....3" in and out. What I want to know is if anyone with the 5.7 has done this....how is the sound on the highway, droning and whatnot? I use the truck on the highway in the winter. Anyone have any actual sound clips? I have always been a Magnaflow guy but any others out there that the 5.7 guys like?

Magnaflow 22 or 18 inches are popular as well as the flowmaster 50hd. I think I will try the flowmaster when my stock one rusts out.

I chopped my factory resonator off and there is almost no noticeable change, except it actually sounds better between 2000-3000rpm (almost on the dot). I will be cut ting off the y-pipe, adding a less restrictive one and welding in a Jones (Aero) Turbine 3030XL with a built in resonator when I do my exhaust. Very cost effective and good sounding on the Hemis I have heard. With the small packaging I actually think I will be able to fit the muffler inside the tubular skid plate besides the transfer case and have it dump just after the skid plate before the axle. I think it will be very clean when it's done, and cheap! Best of luck however you go!

exhaust

Post by yellowranger1 » Wed May 17, 2017 12:50 pm

After hearing a couple of the trucks in Moab, I'm pretty set on getting an aftermarket muffler. Has anyone tried a Borla or AFE? AFE has a video on their YouTube page of a PW with their cat back AND headers, sounds awesome! But I don't want my ears to bleed on an 11hr drive.

Looks like the general consensus is magnaflow gives the best sound without being obnoxious inside. I was about to order the mufflex direct replacement kit, then spoke to a local shop that has done my trucks in the past because I'd like to relocate or eliminate the resonator dibgleberry at the same time. He suggested maybe the next size muffler I think an 18" to keep the exhaust not more moderate. Are these 6" diameter mufflers you guys are running?

I'd still like to do AFE headers. But I've had a long tubes, full exhaust vehicle before and on long drives, it got old after the two-hour mark.

I'll be doing short tube headers, then remaking the factory exhaust from the y-pipe back when I get to it. The y-pipe in the 5.7 is pretty restrictive. As for the muffler I'll be going with the Jones Turbine 3030XL (you would use the 3535XL I believe). ChromolyKid went the Turbine route and loved it from what I remember. What I like is how small, light and cheap the package is and that it is quiet when you're cruising. It's so small that I can fit it under my skid plate by the transfer case so none of my exhaust is exposed (except the pipe by the transmission).

Mike, I'd love to put those headers on the truck, they sound awesome in the clip online. A friend of mine used to work for 4wheeler mag and was at AFE getting an intake/exhaust/tune pit on his power stroke for a review while they were building the PW kit, he said they are as nice as you'd expect them to be for the price. Definitely a little too gnarly for long drives though!

I'll look into the aeroturbine muffler some more, gaining some clearance would be a big bonus. Hadn't realized how massive the stock trash can is!

Stock vs Mufflex kit

Image

Also - Holy cow! All the exhaust companies are VERY proud of their 6.4 cat back kits, $800+ for the complete Magnaflow kit and almost $950 for the AFE?! Mufflex or custom is definitely the more cost effective way to go! Then I won't be spending on a nice tip I'm either not going to use or crush on a trail lol

I will say, anyone, going the EXPO/OVERLAND/OFF-ROAD route, your best bet is to dump over the axle. Skip the tail pipe out the side. It's just one less thing to smack.

I can't stick my onboard water tank ahead of the axle if there's an exhaust pipe there.

So Curiosity got the best of me and I had a magnaflow put on. Went with an 18" oval body that the shop had instead of the 14" he suggested first. I had them leave the resonator in place for now to see how I liked the sound, I'll try removing the resonator later to see if there's much of a difference.

Only about 40mi on it so far and I'm happy with it! Sounds much more aggressive like a truck should, and isn't annoying in the cab, though it's definitely noticeable. Deeper tone at cruising rpm, I don't think it's too bad, but we'll see what the gf thinks after we hit the road memorial weekend... the muffler will be a surprise LOL!

Thanks for the update! I will look into that. Sounds like a good deal though.

I am kinda amazed at how many new truck mufflers get replaced primarily for increased sound :cash: :cash: :cash:
If someone does a fair amount of towing, I would think a constantly louder exhaust at 3000-4000 RPM would get old pretty fast.
Does anyone out there prefer to be seen and not heard???

My RPM's are never in that range towing unless climbing a giant hill. And I have the 14 inch and don't find it to be that loud at all. Have yet to be annoyed.

I was surprised with this one, at least in the cab, it's quieter at higher rpm.
And yeah, this was purely for the sake of sound, on a truck this big and heavy with all the emissions equipment, adding a muffler isn't going to be a noticeable difference except for the ears. I'll upload a sound clip to YouTube and add it here later after driving it some more.

Dumb question. The '13 5.7L exhaust's are still 3" right? Not the 3.5" that the 6.4L truck use? Gotta buy a new muffler, and not sure which I want to go with. Magnaflow 12589, or the Jones Turbine 3030XL, or Flowmaster 50HD 9530560 (seems pricey for aluminized steel versus stainless of the other 2).

I daily drive the truck, and while its not a lot of highway, when I make a trip for 4-5 hours, I don't want to be listening to drone all the time. Figuring I'm going to dump either over the axle, pointing down, or just do a turndown right out of the muffler before the axle (thinking that'll drone more).

Magnaflow won't drone. Crapmaster almost certainly will drone.

If I remember right, the down pipes are 2.5" and after the collector where the muffler is will be 3". You are correct. I remember speccing the Turbine 3030XL as well

Alright, thanks to both of you. Ordered the Magnaflow, 3" in/out. Should be here next week and I won't waste much time installing it. Going to try to keep the factory tailpipe if possible. Going to need to grab some clamps, and some steel rod to bend up as hangers since the factory used the hangers attached to the original muffler. Going to be a few hour project I'm sure!

Alright, installed the Magnaflow 12589 (5x11x22) tonight, cut out the old stock muffler, and installed the Magnaflow in the same basic spot, hooked it up to the stock tailpipe (with the resonator above the axle (not the same as the 6.4L resonator that hangs down).

I'll be honest, its quieter than I was hoping, so I'm hoping it breaks-in a bit louder. I would say if the stock exhaust is a 2/10, and straight pipes are a 10/10, this is about a 4/10 right now. Maybe that goes to a 5/10 with a few thousand miles, we'll see.

If you want louder than stock by any real noticable margin, I would go with the 12259 (5x8x18), but I can't tell you how much louder that would be.

MikeKey, did you notice much break in, and would you agree with my 4/10 sound rating?
