High Quality Tents

Post by TwinStick » Sat Apr 29, 2017 3:35 pm

Just thought I would throw this out there, If anyone is needing a high quality ground tent, Cabela's has their Alaskan Guide models on sale. I have NEVER seen them this cheap. I'm thinking of getting one for when we want to leave the camper at home & travel light-er.

Yeah, I think they are closing out the Alaskan Guide model in green. I ended up getting $800 worth, including shipping. 8 person tent, floor liner, 1 extra main pole & 1 extra fly pole for us and a 4 person tent, floor liner, 1 extra main pole & 1 extra fly pole for my daughters College Graduation present. Gotta love a daughter that wants a tent for Graduation !

i've had (2) green Alaskan Guide tents. one was an 8 man and the other a 4 man. both great tents. when a couple fiberglass poles broke they replaced them free. when my rain fly tore, they replaced it free.

I've been looking for a 4 man tent to keep in the motorhome for the grandkids. Might have to look into these.

They have been selling these for 20-25yrs. Highly rated & highly loved. This is one tent you wouldn't have to worry about unless winds got over 50 mph. I have found that over the years, most people who rate high quality tents poorly, do so because they did not set them up properly---like only using the 4 corners to hold the tent fly on instead of all of them, or forgetting to snap the extra tent holders over the poles before putting the rainfly on.

We camped next to some people at Alexandria Bay State Campground who had a $550 North Face Expedition tent, back in 1984. Awesome tent. Ended up 40' up in the trees when a storm rolled in off the water. Not set up properly at all.

my stupidity. my 4-man went flying in the wind when i was too lazy to stake it in. cabelas knew it was my fault. when my big tent poles broke....i don't remember what happened though. however they replaced it. but these events happened when cabelas was a great company. they hold up to wind very well.

nowadays...i'm not sure what they would do. no wonder they were bought by bass pro.

Bass Pro bought Cabelas in an attempt to bring the company back to the way the Cabela family wanted it to run. BP bought enough to have controlling interest, with a few Cabelas in key positions to run it. The family was kinda behind it, at least according to the financial news reports I read when it happened.

Interesting about Gander Mt.

Set the 8 person tent up today with the wife. 45 min- an hour for the first set up. I love it. VERY WELL MADE. I am super impressed. IMHO, when set up with all the tie outs & done correctly, it would withstand 50 mph winds & driving rain all day long. Got hot inside QUICK but when I opened the vents, it cooled down just as quick. Not too often you get what you pay for anymore. This is one that you do.

I can now attest to the absolutely outstanding workmanship of those tents. An entire night of 50+ mph winds & 4.5 hrs of torrential rain & another 4 of steady hard rain, at a State Park. Not one drop of a leak the entire night. When I went outside in the morning, there were people standing there gawking at the tent & asked me how I made out. I said fine, not one drop of a leak. He said we were the only ones in the entire Park to survive the night in a tent. Now, bear in mind, I set it up properly. Staked every hold down, velcroed every pole junction, used every guyline & staked them out on the rainfly as well. We also used a 12oz cotton duct tarp under the tent floor (to protect from sharp stones) & had the floor liner on the inside. Super impressed. I think there will be more people buying those tents now. They could not believe we had no leaks. There was water literally flowing under the tent floor though. Glad we pitched it on the high ground of our site.

My daughter also used hers on a 4 day trip around Hancock NY. She got 1 solid day of torrential rain & 8 more hrs of reg rain. They did not not have as much grass where they were & it turned into a muddy mess, but they stayed dry & her tent did not leak a drop either. I made sure to tell her---Don't be lazy, use all the stakes & guylines & tie downs. She was glad she did. We hosed it off when she got back.

I just picked up a 23 Zero Rooftop Tent. Hoping that the quality lives up to the reputation and the money I spent.

I hope it works out for you too. I think it would be wise to carry a HD lightweight tarp, just in case you are expecting some wicked weather.

I ain't gonna lie, it brings a HUGE smile to my face when I feel I got a product that works as advertised, at a reasonable price. So satisfying. At one time, that tent was $700+, so getting it on sale for $459, then using my $54 in bonus card points was just icing on the cake.
