Rear Winch?
Rear Winch?
Anyone done a rear winch? I have a Warn SDP (short drum) that I could build a plate to put on the center of the rear bumper. Not sure it's stout enough for this application, but I am not seeing a lot of rear winch bumpers on the market.
Currently, I just use the receiver but would prefer a shorter, permanent solution.

Re: Rear Winch?
A few have mounted a winch in the spare tire space with a fairlead in the bumper. You need to build a pretty substantial bracket to handle the potential load.

Re: Rear Winch?
It's actually a pretty interesting design, nice job on the skid. Interesting that they got the Mercenary 3rd gen bumper to fit on the 4th gen, but then again they did chop up the fenders for 40's.
Rear winch could come in handy.

Re: Rear Winch?
I always thought a rear winch makes more sense for the majority of people. If it is so bad that you can't make it through with 4wd, most people want to go back out, the way they came, not further into the quagmire. Just sayin. Surprised nobody has come out with a combo rear bumper/winch to replace factory rear bumpers on 4x4's. Plus no additional weight on the front. It would be in the rear, where trucks are designed to carry the majority of extra weight.
Re: Rear Winch?
If I can ever get my butt in gear and build it, I'll be running a Warn VR 12,000 in a rear bumper. I have the winch and all the necessary materials, just haven't had the time.
I like that 3rd gen Mercenary bumper on that 4th gen build, my rear fenders are cut about the same anyway so, would be perfect for me!!!

That looks ok and a not a bad price either. Would need to do black tail lights from a Sport to complete the look though.
Definitely the best I have seen.

9 k lb. Should be adequate. I have ran 9 or 9.5 k lb on the front of my second gen (which weighs the same) and short spool 6 k on the rear. It's been more than adequate. I have stalled the rear a few times, but the 9k could easily break 5/16" steel cable. (I went to 3/8" on it, 5/16" is adequate on the 6k). Good to see on the PW that they have the 15k lb cable 7/16"? and only rated at 12 klb.
