Common spare parts to carry on trail?
Common spare parts to carry on trail?
Hi guys,
I'll be heading to Moab in a few weeks and am wondering: What spares do you typically carry with you on the trail?

Hello LagunaH1, honestly in a well maintained or new PW I don't think there is anything that you can anticipate breaking that would merit bringing a spare.

Very cool. Last time I was in Moab, it was in my 1997 H1. That truck was awesome in many ways but needed a lot of care and feedingcoder wrote:Hello LagunaH1, honestly in a well maintained or new PW I don't think there is anything that you can anticipate breaking that would merit bringing a spare.

Laguna, are you joining us for the Power Wagons in Moab get together May 1-7, or will you be in Moab before then? I am camped in Moab for the next couple months, if you want to hit the trails with another wagon, let me know.

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
The things that fail on these trucks seem to be impossible to accurately predict or give lots of warning. Wheel bearings go, but give lots of warning. Steering assemblies go, but give lots of warning. Alternators go with little/no warning.
Bring the usual stuff like a spare air filter, fuses, protective wrap for rubbing cables, self-fusing silicone tape, jumper cables, stuff like that.

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
You could always just tow a second wagon round for spare parts haha. Do a full axle swap mid climb if need be.
Really depends on the condition of your truck. Things do just go but not often. U joints yes and maybe a front axle shaft(I have broken the yokes twice) front drive shaft maybe. Wouldn't worry about shocks or balljoints or anything like that. Just simple stuff. I'd pack a bunch of chicken wire (tie wire like for rebar tying) full socket set and wrenches. Fluids for power steering and tranny (gallon of atf +4) couple gal of coolant maybe spare water pump. Spare alt spare acc belt. I once made a list for a off road excursion to the north west territories. Think remote Alaska for a 1000 mile trip. It was a long list

Good advice
I like to think my truck is in very healthy shape. It only has 11500 miles on it, and have barely been wheeled.

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
That's a brand new truck. And unless you're going into the Maze district, there's practically an AutoZone on every trail. Don't worry about it. But if you're going into Maze.... Read the signs.
Socket set, serpentine belt, coolant, gear oil and RTV if you tear a cover open, tranny oil if you snag a hose. Beer. Electronic cleaner spray for when your SmartBar decided you don't need your lockers any more.

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
Ya, brand new truck. You aren't going to break anything. You'd have to be deliberately stupid in your wheeling to break something.

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
Sounds like the boys have ya covered. 10 - 15 gallons of extra gas is needed I believe. I guess it depends on how much extra sight seeing you do.
As I accidentally mentioned in another thread, the last 11 or so mi are in sand and you are on the go peddle for quite some time. (keep eyes peeled for hidden rocks, sticks and what not in that wash) I almost put my front diff on a boulder that was camouflaged as a shadow near a bush)
Going to be quite beautiful with the rain we have had.
Have fun!

Re: Common spare parts to carry on trail?
On my second gen I carry the following:
LH, inner and RH front axelshafts
Replacement CAD collar
Rear axleshaft
ECM
A paper airfilter and a KnN (last resort)
Power Steering Box
Complete set of braided/rubber brake hoses
Coolant hoses
Heim joints for Thurn steering linkage
Rear axle yokes, u bolts, strap kit
Front driveshaft strap kit
f/r drive shaft and axle shaft u joints
Driveshaft bolts
Rear axle shaft bolts
caliper bolts/pins
spare disc brake pads
Replacement hydraulic hose and repair parts for hydro assist
Replacement bolts for control arms, track bar, leaf spring pins
Spare rear U bolts for leaf springs
Shock bolts
Spare fuel
Spare tire/beadlock wheel
Complete set of bead lock bolts
Complete set of rear lugs and lug nuts
Spare unit bearing
Balljoints
Spare winch controller
Air tools, hand tools, hi lift, welding tools, electrical repair stuff
fuel
In the tow rig, I carry spare steering linkage, leaf springs, driveshafts, two more rear axleshafts (I can eat Dana 70 axleshafts like candy) and steering cylinder, and an additional spare tire/wheel. I have broken all of this stuff on the trail, hence the spares (well except the CAD collar and the unit bearing, but those just seem prudent.)
On the PW, I carry a spare winch controller and 5 gal of fuel, 1 gal of windshield washer fluid. I would do this up to 37" standard radials. Bias plys or off road radials, I would start adding spare gear. (On 37" Krawlers I grenaded a ton of Dana 60/70 parts and steering boxes on the second gen.)
The good thing with CAD is the front end parts can be put in neutral. (I did the 2wd bypass from BD so I can still use low range and have the CAD disengaged.)

Do you have an 8' bed to carry all those spare parts? One might think it would be cheaper to simply tow a second truck out.

Carry a truck bed full of 3rd gen parts if you have any friends you like that much.
