What to do for broken axleshaft???

Post by RAM4ROKS » Sat Mar 04, 2017 9:15 pm

A buddy just called me looking for a driver's side front axle shaft for a 2007. The owner of the truck just snapped his and has a looong drive home so he needs one.

This got me thinking-
What the heck can we do if we snap a front axle shaft? (in terms of patching it up to get home)

Remove the inner shaft, and bolt the outer back on to the hub bearing.

Thought about that but, wouldn't all the gear oil come out since the inner axle seals rest on the shafts?

Or do the seals set to the carrier bearing races????

So, I thought- seal the end of the axle and overfill with gear oil but, seems like WAY too much chance of contamination from crap in the axle tube itself. (since the only seal is inner axle) Wish someone aftermarket made an outer axle seal like they do for Dana 44 and 60!

There have been a number of '07's that broke the driver side axle shaft. The break is usually on the radius from shaft to u-joint flange on the axle shaft, not the stub shaft.

Correct, it was the portion in the axle tube NOT the stub that busted.

Ram4rocks - you give me a call if you need an axle shaft for an 07, assuming we are talking about a dodge 2500 and has the AAM 9.25 axle. I think you have my info?

I take it axle breakage is less on the newer generation after the change to a the larger rear diff? Just heard of someone spinning there tires on a regular 2500 in snow and busting one a little while back. Just snow!
2018 Flame Red, Moon Roof, Dual Alternators, Ram Boxes sadly Ram ran out of, Luxo Package with 8.4 UConnect, Enter and Go with remote start, Auto Wipers and Lights. Added missing skids and White Knuckle sliders. 35" BFG KM3s. Procal and Warn wireless remote for winch.

The rear 10.5 AAM on the PW has the same axle shaft as the 11.5 AAM. The standard 2500 10.5 uses a smaller axle shaft. The front 9.5 AAM axle shaft is the same for all 2500's and 3500's.

Thank you! I do now!

Also, thank you everyone for the responses!

They ended up just removing the broken shaft, cleaning out the axle tube, sealing the axle tube at the "C", taking the stub shaft off and bolting it back in and driving home.

That works in a pinch. Glad they got it figured

Yup, this is correct. A reg 2500 10.5" is 1.23" dia. A PW 10.5" is 1.53" dia.

The truth will set you free.... Why you think I swapped my overweight oversized 11.5 for a proper 10.5 with big axle shafts

So your 7500 pound truck now weighs 7420 pounds and has 3/16" more ground clearance lol. Jk, my post has some seriousness to it, as i kept seeing 10.5" but thought i had a 11.5".

No I think my truck is a bit more portly than that. But it goes fast..... Because of that axle weight reduction yes!

 Actually, the new 2017 Power Wagons have 35mm front axle shafts ( 1.37795") and the rear is 38mm (1.49606"). So the 1.53" axle shafts (same as the 1ton diesels) (38.862mm) in the tiny axle is actually stronger, but the axle housing is stronger in the 11.5". There, cleared that up for ya !

Not sure of the dia of the front axle shafts ?
