2014-17 tire size consensus

Post by Kodiak » Sun Feb 26, 2017 12:41 pm

Hi guys, new member here, been lurking for a while and my account finally got approved. Appreciate all the knowledge on here.

I've been looking for some time now and I still haven't gotten a good sense about what the largest tire size I can fit on the stock wheels without rubbing at full lock or articulation on the 2014-17's. Any consensus on this?

In before "use the search feature"... I have. From 35s to 37s to 295/75's. Read many posts, still don't have a clear idea, was hoping to hear a more consistent message with this thread. Thanks in advance!

Update, making list of tire brands/sizes with fitment experience:

BFG KO2s 35X12.5. No rubbing the arms or swaybar, however, have not yet been in a full articulation situation to test the rubbing while turning.

Nitto Trail Grappler MT's 35x12.5 on factory wheels. No noticeable rubbing on radius arms or sway bar and had it off-road quite a few times with sway bar disconnected and flexed

Nitto Ridge Grapplers 37x12.5 stock wheels, with 1.5" level and 45 psi minor rubbing at full lock, spare location not attempted.

Toyo RT 35x12.50 on stock wheels, fits under bed in stock location, zero rubbing on radius arms on road or off road.

Toyo RT's 37x12.5 on +18mm offset wheels rub the fender liner and base of the inner part of the fender flare. Mild trimming required.

Toyo Open Country AT/II 35x12.50 on stock wheels, fits under bed in stock location aired down, no rubbing on Radius or Sway bar

Yokohamas 315/70-17 no rubbing on road, no noticeable rubbing with light off roading, unknown with sway bar disconnected.

On stock wheels probably 35x11.5. 35x12.5 and 37x12.5 on stock rims are both going to rub the radius arms and sway bar.

I have a 2016 Laramie Power Wagon. Currently running Yokohamas in the 315/70-17 size with the stock wheels. Absolutely no rubbing while on road. Haven't noticed any rubbing off-road, but nothing hard core so far. The sway bar has not been disconnected yet with these tires.

Replaced my stock tires with 35X12.5 KO2s. The tires have not rubbed the arms or swaybar, however, I have not yet been in a full articulation situation to test the rubbing while turning.

As for the tires themselves, they are absolutely better than the Duratracs by every measure important to me (ride, handling (pavement and gravel), quiet, rain and snow). I cannot compare the KO2s to Duratracs in the mud as I did not have the Duratracs in the mud, only gravel roads.

I had 35x12.5 Nitto Trail Grappler MT's on factory wheels on my 14... Did not have any rubbing on radius arms or sway bar and had it off-road quite a few times... Sway bar discoed and flexed out... If it did rub it was so minimal that I didn't notice... Have 37's with aftermarket wheels on my 15 with no lift and they rub the sway bar and the fender liners... Also had to trim the fender liner and pinch seam to make them work on the stock suspension...

Also beautiful. For those running 35s, any trouble mounting in spare tire location? I know another member had to really deflate his Toyos to make it fit.

I could not get a fairly worn, read use as spare only, 35x12.5 Nitto Trail Grappler MT to fit in the factory spare location... Even deflated to about 10PSI... I know others have said they have successfully fit a 35" spare in the factory location... I, however, was not successful... I also knew I was going to go to 37's anyway so had already talked myself into using the bed for the spare...

You do quite a bit of off roading, any issues so far? Do they make an "extreme" version in that size for more aggressive looking sidewall?

That size is the Xtreme. [Yea they spell it with an X right on the side wall like it's 1994]
2016-05-1253.jpg
I haven't had issues yet. I've seen guys with 37's have issues with them rubbing the fender liner when stuffed. I haven't really stuffed the tire in awhile.
2016-06-18335.jpg
I think it might of rubbed a little bit on the fender liner. I know that GTOMike's 37's rub the fender liner like crazy when stuffed.
2016-06-18333.jpg
But no real problems. No missing chunks in the tires or anything that would cause concerns. They'll get put through the paces again in Moab in May.

Another confirmation for the Toyo RT 35/12.50 on stock wheels, fits under bed in stock location (BARELY), zero rubbing on radius arms on road or off road.

Yeah, I have the 37 X 12.50 Ridge Grapplers on stock rims as well - Tradesman. I have Thuren front level springs on it now 1.5 In, they only rub at full lock on Radius arms, most of the time they dont. It was the same with stock front suspension. I have had it off road, nothing crazy, but it will rub a little at full stuff, nothing too bad though. They measure just a hair over 36 inches on truck mounted with 45 lbs in front. I was really surprised with no trimming needed when I drove it on stock front suspension for a few weeks before I leveled it.

Good thread !!!
