Awesome man! I'm glad you're coming, even if it's just for a few days. You'll love Moab.

What is your Rugged Radio? Does it have channels or frequencies? Might be a HAM

FRS is pretty cheap, and I already have one. And they work well enough in a tight group. And if we have a few guys with Ham, like aearles stated, they can blast much further over the overlap.

I just know it will lesson the "what's going on, do I get out of my truck" if we have comms on the trails. Also will help with spotting. We'll try to get it sorted and have some spares too.

The rugged radios are typically just Chinese vhf/uhf business or ham radios, they're actually illegal to use without a license too but RR does their best to conceal that. It may already have FRS/GMRS frequencies, or you can get the programming cable and add them with the CHIRP software. If you want some help, post up the model info and we can find the appropriate cable and specs.

Does it look like this...

Or maybe less blue? Because that's a $60 option.

MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

FRS (Costco pack) radios, CB radios and HAM radios are options for comms. I don't think anyone needs to spend money on a radio, and If anything I think we can share a few, as mentioned earlier they are primarily for spotters to communicate.

If people want to spend a few dollars for comms for the trip, you can't beat the Baofeng UV-5R. As much as I want to call it a cheap pile of junk, it's actually a butt-kicking radio, and priced at only $25 with prime shipping on Amazon. It is a HAM radio that operates on both 2m and 70cm/440 but they designed it to be open-ended so you can actually program it to operate on the GMRS/FRS channels, which are the channels used by the Costco style family radios usually with 10 channels. Legally you are required to have a HAM license to talk (not to listen) on this radio and it is not lawful to program the frequencies of GMRS/FRS, but nobody is going to check, and half the other keeps out there are doing the same thing.

I disagree... for $30, you can get a blister-pack of FRS radios that do the same thing without the complication of the baomemes.
"Am I legal on this frequency?"
"Why can I hear you but you can't hear me?"
"So if you're on sub-channel 7, where's that on here?"
Buddy bought a couple, used them out riding last week... first day, radio check, his doesn't work... thought he had it set up, but forgot a couple of important settings. Sat down with him at the computer, 20 minutes later got everything fixed and working.
Receiver on the baofengs is junk, stock antenna is trash, and the transmitter doesn't even come close to rated power. More buttons/features doesn't make it better equipment.

If radio's something you want to get into and learn about, they're capable radios for $30.
But for something to just chat between a group, they're not worth the headache.

Coming from someone who works with this equipment semi-professionally...

I can't wait, it's gonna be awesome!!!!

Now I just have to get my truck "ready"! (I say "ready" rather than ready because I know I am not going to be able to complete my to do list) SO many things I would like to do but, gotta narrow it down to a few must have completed things which are:
OBA
Rocklights

I would like to have bumpers done, rear winch on, all auxiliary lights wired, rock sliders, and bed cage/overland rack done. But, that's not realistic at all.

My list....

- 2m radio
- race radio
- all of my prototype lights
- rock lights
- twin shifter center console installed
- lowrance GPS
- twin analog clocks (sourced from pt cruisers)
- rear bumper
- build center console
- figure out and resolve the trans issue
- fluids

Possible list, not likely in time
- cage the truck
- rebuild the shocks
- replace the shackles with Thuren
- brake lines
- engine fluid dampener
- spark plugs
- coolant flush

I'm sure I missed something, lol

I'd focus on those sliders more than rock lights. :poke:

 Seems like you should be able to get those done with your fluids?? :poke: I mean spark plugs don't take that long on the Hemi.

Ram4rocks, I would suggest getting your bumpers done over everything else. That's a long drive through a lot of wildlife areas. Totaling your truck from a deer strike sounds pretty lame. Get bumpers on there, even if they are just OEM's. Rock rails are good too but it looks like you've already rolled your truck 5 or 6 times so...

Pit, what radio are you going with? Also I see you separated race radio, do you mean 440 or are you going headsets?

I've got rock rails, they just don't have kickouts to them. LOL! @ the looks like the truck has been rolled comment!

Good point on the deer strike potential, front bumper and installing my auxiliary lighting may be wise.

As to off-road lights, I really try not to drive off-road at night, and especially in a place like Moab or Escalante. Even a nice road out there has random drainages that break things easily. Don't go nuts getting stuff ready and hit the road already beat man. Half the fun of Moab is knowing you are driving something that can't do all the trails. You actually have to try hahaha

I've got a few minor things to take care of. Finish my OBA, new brakes (although I'm waiting till end of April to do this so they'll be brand new for Moab), shocks, extend the breathers, comms and possibly a new front bumper.

Want to spend some more time in Moab with mostly stock suspension before I go to Thuren w/ a King 2.5 system and 37's. This way I can get a real feel for myself what the differences will be like.

Yeah, that's a re-branded and pre-programmed Baofeng UV-5R. You can buy the baofeng programming cable for $7 on Amazon and use free software CHIRP to read and add to the configuration. But @Mule has a point, it's easy to misconfigure something and have it not work in the field, so either test thoroughly ahead of time and pre-configure the appropriate CTCSS/PL tone (once chosen), or it may be better to just grab a moto/midway/uniden handheld. The primary reason to use the baofeng would be an external antenna.

We're putting together a comms plan and contact sheet for the group, as well as a dropbox link with access to group resources (contact sheet, gps waypoints/routes, photos & video, etc.) that will be shared once we have everyone's info. @MikeKey put together a sign up sheet to make things easy here:
