Tuner Questions

Post by Jbostick » Wed Feb 15, 2017 6:00 pm

Hey guys, since putting 37s on my truck I've been running in tow haul mode the majority of the time because of the way the transmission shifts. I am looking at getting a tuner for fixing my speedometer and TPMS but would also like to have the transmission tuning capabilities. I don't put much stock in the performance gains that tuners give so I'm not worried about that. Will recalibrating my speedometer fix the transmission shift points? or do i need to get a tuner that is capable of changing the shift points.

Results will depend on which PW version you are running (engine size, gear ratios) and where you are. If in California, your tuner choices are very limited because of CARB crap. I have an '05 with 5.7, 4.56s and 35s. Used to need tow/haul a lot in the mountains but that improved considerably when I installed an Edge Insight tuner (one of the few I could find that was CARB-legal). I tried the Econo tune and the level one 87 octane tune (don't remember exactly what they call it), and was not impressed by economy or performance. Then switched to 87 performance tune (whatever they call it, it's level three in their system) and it made a huge difference. I think most of the improvement was due to their remapping of trans shift points, rather than tweaking timing or fuel delivery. I reset the tuner to the actual diameter of the tires before I tried the different tunes. I did not do any custom tuning, just applied their canned tunes, and it was worth it. My truck also has Banks Monster Exhaust, Magnaflow Y-pipe, and Injen CAI. Air in, air out, and new shift points made a lot of improvement. My truck is pretty heavy, all the time.

Getting the speedo calibrated will go a long way to getting the shift points corrected.

Hello Jbostick,

I have 35" tires and a free flowing magnaflow exhaust and y pipe with everything else stock, buy far the best performance upgrade I have ever done was to simply use a Hypertech Speedometer Adjuster and adjust my speedometer to matchs my cell phone satellite speed at 65 and my truck flies now I can light up my tires easily, I was more than impressed with just that (it basically adjusted all the shift-points), and for around $200.

thanks guys, I have an 2012 5.7 and live in Alabama. Im considering the super chips flash cal because its only 200$ and seems to have all the capabilities i am looking for. I was also thinking i should just go on and buy the hemifever unit that has the custom mapping but i don't plan on any other performance upgrades so I'm not sure i would see much benefit.

Do your homework....learn from me.

I wanted to adjust my TPMS as well. I have a 2011 PW. Superchips Flashpaq F5 will not work on our trucks......4 Wheel Parts says it will but Superchpis techs told me no after I bought one and worked with the techs for a month.....they told me their sister company Diablosport has a tuner the Intune I2010 will work......and they are having a sale. Great...so I bought one through the tech. Guess what....can't adjust TPMS with it. So now I dealing with that and still waiting for a refund from 4 Wheel Parts.

I talked to the guys at HemiFever and they said the Bully Dog 40417 is pretty much the only one on the market that can tune and do TPMS. I am taking them at their word.

If you know differently please let me know.

I Have a Hemi Plus GT from BullyDog that I had in a 2012 that was not a Power Wagon. It seemed to work well I could turn off the TPMS but not adjust it. Considering installing it into my Power Wagon to see how this truck would react to it. I did notice a slight mileage increase in the old truck, I would doubt if it would change much in the PW.

I've just noticed now on super chips site it doesn't even list comparability with 2500.

PWAMatt2012, So the Bully dog unit just allows you to turn off the TPMS warning light? does the tire pressure still display and blink at you upon start up? Thanks for the info guys

It also should be mentioned that the Bully tuners are VIN locked after you use it, as another member on here found out. So if you ever plan on selling it, you basically can't, because it will only work with your truck. Bully can unlock it, but iirc if costs just as much or more than the unit itself. Pretty shitty deal.

That's more than likely just the generic basic overview of features. I know for a fact the old ones don't on a Wagon. That's probably just for the Jeep Rubicons, I know it does on them.

I have the Bullydog GT+ Hemi on mine, so I can answer your questions.

1. The Bullydog allows you to disable your TPMS feature. You cannot adjust the TPMS setting. It's either on, or off. I turned mine off.
2. No, you cannot control your lockers or swaybar with the Bullydog. In fact, that isn't even an option on the screen.
3. You CAN adjust your tire size and axle ratio with the Bullydog, thus changing the shift points (I assume). I bought mine when I bought larger tires, so I've never run my truck without the adjustments.
4. I run mine in the 87 Performance tune. Does it do much? Not really. However, I didn't expect much out of the tuner. I just wanted the features of adjustment. I've never run it on the 93 Tune setting, because I don't feel like paying that much more for fuel. If I want to go fast and pay for 93 octane, I jump in my Z06.

I hope that helps you guys! My truck is a 2012, for your information.

Does the bullydog take away the torque management? These trucks don't seem reponsive enough in the lower rpm band.

Went the same route. It was simple and worked well w/ my 37s. I measured and programmed for actual measured tire height though. You can also use it to check and clear CEL codes.

I know that you can adjust the throttle sensitivity, because I made mine fairly touchy (I prefer that setting over the factory setting). At full throttle, when changing gears, it shifts pretty hard/firm. Enough that it will chirp the tires going from 1st to 2nd. As far as true torque management settings, I don't recall there being any options to adjust that portion.

My advise is to find a used one and pay half the price. Once the truck/tuner is returned back to factory through the programming, it unlocks and allows you to install on another vehicle.

On My 2012 non PW when you went to check the Tire Pressure after turning it off it was just a blank read out for Tire Pressure. Once I get my truck back from the dealer I will install it in my PW. And see what all it can do.
