Re: How many of you are overweight?
You have bags or anything on there? Did a damn good job balancing it, looks perfectly loaded.

Thanks. No air bags just load level hitch. Here's a pic without the hitch bars attached

Re: How many of you are overweight?
Still looks good, what's the dry weight of that trailer? I was thinking of pulling a buddies toy hauler to a riding park sometime and it weighs a tiny bit over 10k and that's right at my limit so I don't know how it will handle that without bags or anything and a leveling kit.

I think the trailer empty is around 2800 kg. truck pulled it good with lots of power. Tranny likes 4th gear on the hi way doing around 105km/h

Re: How many of you are overweight?
This is mine loaded up on the way hunting last fall. 7000lb trailer with my ATV, generator, fuel cans, chainsaw and ramps in the truck. Plus most of my storage and my water tank in my trailer are forward of the trailer axles so my tongue weight is pretty good. I've got the Air Lift air bags and Daystar cradles. Works awesome!

Re: How many of you are overweight?
So I'm looking into a low pro gooseneck for trip to Moab next easter... Can't find any hard data on weight of trailer just yet but by my calculations the jeeps will weigh roughly 8100 so that leaves 2200 for trailer till max rating. I've seen an average of around 3200 for a 26', does that seem within realm of real? So I'd be 1000 over factory rating, I plan on airbags which would technically raise the towing capacity, right? But it wouldn't in legal means correct?

Re: How many of you are overweight?
That sounds about right. That's the thing that sucks about out trucks is the lowered towing capacity. My dad farms and I asked him awhile back why he used his Peterbilt and trailer to haul smaller stuff instead of getting a gooseneck for his truck and he told me they aren't worth the money and are basically useless unless you have a dually or a really high rated 3/4 ton. Since they are so long, you are prone to load more on it, and since they hold more weight, you're prone to loading it heavier, but then after all that, then you factor in the weight of the trailer and you're way over what a normal 3/4 ton can handle and basically need a 1 ton just to be able to use it. So you either have to load it light (1 vehicle and maybe a couple smaller toys and gear with our trucks) or get a bigger truck. Sucks really, kind of a catch 22.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
About where mine sits... haven't had it across a scale, but the trailer alone is pretty heavy to begin with (heavy-wall steel frame (carhauler, basically)). Then throw in a sled or two, fuel, gear, etc.... and drag it around in the mountains.khicks wrote:I think the trailer empty is around 2800 kg. truck pulled it good with lots of power. The power and fuel mileage of a turbo diesel would be nice, but it's also nice to be able to dump the jerry can of fuel into whatever engine needs it. Ran the premix that was left in my sled through the truck over the past month.
Two sleds, two guys, week's worth of gear, garage full of tools... into 30-40m/h headwinds for a few hundred miles...

Re: How many of you are overweight?
Just hauled this 1000 miles part of which were driving up the Virginia West Virginia mountains. Never got below 7 MPG running the speed limit or above. Once I got through the mountains the power wagon averaged 9.6 MPG running 89 Hemi Fever tune. The trailer empty is 3400lbs with the mustang I haven't weighted it yet but figure close to 4000 lbs for the mustang. The trailer is 24'
Re: How many of you are overweight?
I found this thread while searching what the true towing capacity of the 2015 Power Wagons are. I traded in a 2007 for a 2015 after seeing that the tow rating had gone up to 15,000+ lbs according to the towing guide on ramtrucks.com. Sounded right to me because of the bigger engine etc. After searching the towing guide after the purchase I found a 3rd listing at the very bottom where is shows only 9,700lbs. I tow a ~8,500lb travel trailer and had no intention of downgrading but it looks like a may have. This is not good, we were planning a slightly bigger trailer.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
Again I will say that I think this latest generation Power Wagon is under-rated in terms of capacity. I often tow my dump trailer loaded to 15,000 pounds without any issues. Perhaps if I had to make the trip from Dillon to Eisenhower pass several times a day I would have a different opinion. Stock - no air bags - no load leveling bars.
The 6.4 horsepower and torque are definitely an improvement for towing IMHO. If you do heavy towing, stick with stock tire sizes. Larger diameter tires negatively impact towing capacity given the same gearing.
Keep your tires hard (65psi or higher) set your brake gain correctly, and make sure you're using tow/haul mode!

Re: How many of you are overweight?
I bought my new new 2015 PW while on a camping trip, so I towed the trailer with an '07 to the trip, then back home with the '15. The new truck definitely pulled the trailer better than the old even though the old technically has a higher capacity. The traction control pulling on wet roads was a welcome addition.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
Question
gvwr = 8510 lbs (per the door sticker) when i registered my truck I had to have it weighed = 6100 lbs. 8510 - 6100 = 2400 lbs
2400 lbs is what the people + stuff can weigh before the truck is over loaded ....correct ?
Provided the tires are rated for that ?
thanks in advance

Re: How many of you are overweight?
Sometimes people obsess over the term payload - Ram classified the Power Wagon with a GVWRC of 8510 pounds despite it being a 3/4 ton truck. It has been classified that way through each of the modern generations. A standard 3/4 ton Ram with a 6.4 hemi and 11.5" rear end is given a GVWRC of 10000 pounds.Takingatrip1 wrote:So that figure for the tires... That's adittional load not including the truck?
So what is the capacity of the tires?
Goodyear specs. the LT285/70-17 to 3195 lbs @ 65 PSI and that is 6390 lbs for the pair. So driving on the highway, at highway speeds, fully inflated, they can carry that much weight.
What is the capacity of the AAM 11.5 rear axle?
It's listed as 6010 pounds - which is less than the pair of Load range D DuraTracs.
The 2014 PW rear end weighs about 2880 pounds - so considering only the tires and axle the most you should carry on the rear end is:
6010 - 2880 = 3130 pounds max payload Carrying more than this will overload your axle
Of course there are other factors which can de-rate your carrying capacity such as the "soft" PW rear coil springs...

I've made my living driving trucks and over the years I've seen thousands upon thousands of terrible pickup truck and trailer combos and pickups grossly overloaded, for the most part it seems that law enforcement really doesn't care ( at least here in CA ) unless your involved in an accident causing bodily injury.
That being said, use the guidelines (loosely) from the manufacturers and a whole bunch of common sense and you'll be fine.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
pulled 10,500 pounds of cattle with trailer weight included yesterday in my new stock trailer. mostly flat roads. 'live' loads make it interesting on the road for a PW.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
I realize this thread is old but... was doing some searching...
i have a 2017 pw. I pull a NASH 17K travel trailer, max weight on the trailer is 6995lbs. I live at high altitude and pull my camper frequently. (we travel full time, i work remotely)
I stopped by the CAT Scales the other day...
steer axle weighted in at 4380lbs (max 4750)
drive axle 4920 (max 6200)
trailer axle 5760 (max 6995)
total: 15060
GVWR (according to my door) is 8510lbs, so that puts me 790lbs over weight. Even though I'm underweight on axle rating and underweight on the gross combined weight, (which i think is somewhere around 17000 lbs). So underweight, technically, but over weight for gvwr... or cargo... lame.
I added the firestone airbags with the day star cradle.
At a minimum i have to keep 5 lbs of air in the bags, as per owners manual for the bags.
The rear sits about 3/4" higher than it did with stock, with no load and 5lbs of air.
With a fully loaded truck and trailer, I load springs to 25lbs of air, and this brings my rear height to about .5" lower than the stock right height (before adding bags - so i'm allowing it to sag some.)
The airbags have solved the rear end sagging issue. The truck seems to handle the weight fine. it does struggle on steep grades at high altitude, but that is to be expected. I do hate being overweight, from a legal issue, but the truck seems fine. I've thought about swapping to a normal 2500 or 3500 with a cummins but, i really think my truck is fine with the current setup. Please let me know if anyone thinks my truck is 'overloaded' and dangerous re: mechanical failure - i do realize the legal issue of being over weight and that is a risk i am willing to take.

Re: How many of you are overweight?
I'm over payload with just me in the truck by 30 lbs. I'm under everything that matters. Payload is a made up number. I have airbags account for suspension. I think it's fine and I'm very safety conscious.
