3rd Gen Smartbar Locker Bypass

Post by myoung84 » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:58 am

I haven't forgotten about the 3rd gen guys. Still doing research to see what options we have available to make this an easy to install plug and play kit like the 4th gens. The 3rd gen wire harness locations are a bit different and have made things a bit tougher. I'll keep you posted! Thank you for your continued interest in these kits!

I thought you had a 4th gen. I don't have anything available for 3rd gen yet.

Guys, I'm having a hell of a time on the third gens. The one stupid connector that's under the dash is not available anywhere it seems. I even cross referenced it to a Toyota part number and they don't have it available to order either. Still trying, but just thought I'd keep you guys posted!

Here's the pics for both along with the Yazaki, Sumitomo, and Toyota Part numbers. This is also referred to a connector C137 on the Dodge wiring info, in which no repair kits are available...

Called some Toyota parts dealers and they see the number in their system but none available to order. Called my regular connector suppliers and they can pull up the parts but can't get them. Contacted several other connector suppliers I found online that also can't offer much help. Very frustrating... Still have a couple feelers out with some other companies.

Yazaki
7282-1148 Male Connector
7283-1148 Female Connector
7114-4020 Male Pins
7116-4020 Female Pins

Sumitomo
6245-0281 Male Connector
6241-0261 Female Connector
8230-4492 Male Pins
8240-4882 Female Pins

Toyota
90980-10812
90980-10813
(No pins)

Another brain storming idea:

There are 11 wires in that harness. I only need to work with 5 of them. Three of the wires need to be intercepted and only use the dash side leaving the smartbar side open. Two wires need to tapped into. The whole idea behind using these connectors with a T-Harness is so we don't have to cut the factory harness. What are your thoughts about leaving the harness in place and removing three of the wires from one of the connectors and using a comparable mating pin outside the connector. For the other two wires, a posi-tap would be used to tap into those wires. For the pins that you pull out of the connector, I'd provide shrink tubing to cover up the bare pins. In the event that you need to go back to stock, just cut the shrink tubing, unmate the pins, and stab back in the correct hole.

This might actually be the easiest way to accomplish this mod. You won't be able to pass an entire T-Harness through the firewall so I'd have to have wires with bullet type connectors on it so you can pass those through the firewall then connect to the T-Harness. And if we're pulling pins, we could do the same exact thing at the smartbar connector and not have to mess with running wires through the firewall.

Scratch the idea of tapping into the harness at the smartbar. It's a colossal pain in the ass to disassemble and pull the pins. Here's what I'm proposing for harness under the dash. Pulling these pins is simple, just need a tiny flat head screw driver. Cover the connection in shrink tubing and we're good to go. There are three connections like this and two additional will have posi-taps.

Already tried the Toyota links. It's in there system but no stock in the US and not available for order. I hate that they still list them...

The last two want you to purchase 500 pieces! I Don't think I'll ever be able to sell that many! Haha. I tried that source and a couple others and they refuse to break full packages.

I do appreciate the effort! Still waiting on two emails to come back....

What do you think about my ideas above?

That I don't know. Rws5040 was kind enough to send me a full harness so I have the connectors but don't know exactly where this connector is located. Only thing my info shows is under the driver side dash.

Yep, tried them too. Got a quote for 23 of that connector at $0.40 each and nothing else. Guess that's the last of what they have and want them gone...

Found them! As long as I purchase 100 of each connector and a 5000 piece reel of each terminal. Yikes! I've asked if there's any possibility of reducing the MOQ but it's unlikely. Based on the amount of this single purchase, overall kit pricing will jump up quite a bit. If I can get a slightly lower quantity, I'd still prefer the T-harness, bit I don't think the additional cost is worth it.

What are everyone else's thoughts on having to pull pins from the connector under the dash? Price would stay at $250...

Keeping the factory look on the dash side and having it work every time would be worth it to me. Not like I have a warranty any more to worry about.
