Overland Expo - Mormon Lake, AZ. 17 thru 19 May

Post by Cactus Red » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:37 am

We'll be at the show on Saturday the 18th on day passes. If any of the PW crew is attending, it would be great to figure out a meeting time. We'll be in the Cactus Red Power Wagon again this year.

I sure wish we could make it  , but doesn't look like it's in the cards this year again. With Moab the week before and a Disney vacation the week after, I've got this pesky thing called work, that's going to get in the way in between  . Maybe next year.

If you have an HT, that may be the best way to meet up on Saturday.

My call is KE7IXX, and we generally use 146.46 for group comms. Last year we heard a fair amount of traffic on it Friday as we were coming in to camp.

I'll be there the whole three days. Just doing day passes cause I will have my five year old daughter with me. Hoping to get some fishing in also. I took the tire repair class two years ago and it was great. Also in the market for a new roof top tent. OvExpo is awesome. Only downside is it makes me wish I had a LOT more money.

I am over by the winching course set up. Just north of there. I have seen two other PWs, one gen 4-white, one gen 3- black with camper set up. Being here makes me wish I had a lot more money. It also makes me want an adventure motorcycle like a BMW 1200 ish type. So awesome!

Why am I up at 220 am you ask? Cause the group south of me forgot that there are 5000 other people around them trying to sleep. It is ok though, cause I am an EARLY riser, and I will be loud as shit in about three or four hours. Have a great nights rest losers! :winchmob:

Well, anyone who is into vehicle based camping should try to visit this Expo at least once. Really laid back and just awesome stuff. I bought a HAM radio today and a book on taking the test so I guess I am getting into yet another hobby. But these radios are far superior to CB and those toy walkie talkies we all have. Anyone else here do the HAM stuff? I am camped next to two seperate groups that both use Power Wagons for work for the government in a LE capacity. Great hearing the stories of PW awesomeness in service for our country. :patriot:

It was fun! The black PW is a RENTAL! Fully outfitted w/ Thuren stuff and a 4WC too boot. I also saw a couple other PW in the parking area, and made sure to mention the forum. No pics - didn't bring a camera...

We used HAM handy talkies all day to keep in contact as we roamed around. They work great for that as well as trail comms. A mobile works well for distance - I was over 30 miles away when I made first contact with the group as I came over the AZ divide on I-40 west of Flag.

I so need to learn the HAM radio ins and outs. It's about time I did! As soon as I get a license will you help me get started a bit?

Absolutely!

Might even be able to chat with you via IRLP (internet radio linking project). http://www.irlp.net/

I have a node near me, looks like there is a 70CM node (#7855) between you and Sandia. That will require a dual band radio tho.

The one thing I wish I had a camera for was the AEV JK with a BLOWER on a 6.4L...
