Lost all gears while driving, transfer case?

Post by coder » Tue Feb 11, 2020 5:36 pm

While I was driving down the freeway this morning the engine revved up it went into a free spinning state like neutral and I couldn't shift into any gear. I had to coast to the side of the road and call a tow truck.

I can shift through the gears in both the transmission and transfer case but but nothing happens.

I'm thinking it's a transfer case problem, there was no warning signs everything was smooth and quiet, thoughts?

Got jacks/lift? It'd be pretty easy to diagnose the t-case if you can get teh wheels off the ground.
What's the transmission fluid look like?

No codes? Wonder if it's a trans solenoid.

Just got the diagnosis the transfer case is fine the transmission pump failed time to get the transmission rebuilt. I have my truck in a reputable shop nearby it should be done late next week.

Go the truck back on Saturday. Once they got it apart they found that the seal around the pump was leaking, it had been that way for 2-3 years because it made a very slight whining sound, it finally came out and lost all pressure.

At 185k miles with nothing ever done to the transmission since 2007 when I bought the truck, except for fluid and filter changes, I can't complain.

The transmission is fully rebuilt now I have been driving it for a few days while it goes through the computer relearning process. I've had 3-4 rough downshifts, this is normal I was told to expect it, everything is running smooth and quiet now it shifts great, I'm back on the road again!

Mine did the same last summer while going through the Rockies with our travel trailer in tow. That was a very expensive adventure.
When mine went out the truck was right at 90,000 miles. I have a 101500 on it now.
