Whats the reason for the big price jump and extra cost for passengers?

They got hit in 2018 by the BLM (at the last minute) over not being properly registered so, which requires you have an insurance policy, etc. A many thousand dollar last minute charge that wasn't budgeted. Which is why it was officially cancelled in 2018, it was just a bunch of people driving around - not an organized group. Last year they went and jumped through all the hoops and such, and it's about the same price this year as last year.

They are requiring a spill kit and a GMRS radio (which requires an FCC license) this year, which they didn't last year. Or at least I didn't have last year.

Well that's some shit. I remember hearing about that during the 2018 pwim.

We won't make it this year bc the wife will be 7months pregnant but I'm hoping we can make it next year.

Looking forward to the pics and vendor support this year.

The short answer: The Government made a lot of demands. All of it is expensive.

GMRS only requires a license for high power (>2W) and repeaters. Otherwise it can be run license-free simplex and <=2W.
Edited to add: on the "Gear" page, BTECH UV-5X3 is listed. That is not, and cannot be, a legal GMRS radio. It's a ham radio, not type-certified for FRS or GMRS use. Will it work, yes. Legally, no.

Once again, same weekend as Spring Fling, and snowmobiles > trucks.

Baofengs are no longer able to handle GMRS. The FCC got pissy about their out-of-band programmability and all new Baofengs by law must stick within the official 2M and 70cm bands. Whether or not you can actually still get an out of band one I don’t know.

Not like the law stopped ,uh... those other people... anyways.

Who wants a sub-2 Watt radio anyways? That’s lame. I want my handheld to give me cancer and melt paint.

Should be pointed out those on the site are just recommendations, I tried finding stuff to point people towards. Any GMRS, even one on ebay will work.

I just tried to find 3 of everything to make it easier to give people an idea. I made a list and JorDanee put it up on the site, but looking at it now, I can see how (options) might make it seem like you have to buy one.

The BLM is the one saying we need to carry spill kits. They never really said if it was just the trail guides or everyone. I dunno. Some nonsense blah blah about other groups causing environmental concern and pushing more groups to be responsible.

EVERYONE, no exceptions. We have to be able to communicate with the group. We do have break downs and things. Something happens in the back of the group, we need to be able to alert each other.

And what do you need in a spill kit?
I just got this $30 spill kit on Amazon. It included a huge stack of absorbent pads, two 4ft booms, a pair of nitrile gloves, and trash bags. I split the kit in half so I could fit it behind/under the rear seat.

I ordered it for PWIM this year, but it’s probably valuable to keep on hand always!

I think a good addition to the kit would be Plug-N-Dike putty

For those of you who have run moab, this is going to be my first time out there and wondering if you guys have seen any issues having a canopy and frame twist/flex. Also recommendations if you can get by without sliders by going up to 37's or just live with the thoughts that i'll probably have some body damage. THanks

Depends on how good you are. I followed a guy without sliders on 37s. He didn't get any damage on a pretty hard trail, he made it over the obstacles and then he winched up on my sliders (running 33s). But he was very experienced.

Not sure about the flex issue, haven't heard any. Lots of people are running rooftop tents on racks of various makes. But I don't so can't say.

Not too much issue with topper flex. I think it should be fine.

37’s make Moab a different game. I ran 37’s and no sliders last year on a 3” lift and only scraped the underside of the cab once on an optional line. On 33’s you’ll scrape a lot but shouldn’t cause any harm. 37’s are really where the magic is. I’d advise rock sliders if you can do it, but they aren’t necessarily mandatory, unless they are listed as mandatory under the event equipment which they may be.

No problems for me last year with rack/tent on 37s and no sliders. I wasn’t doing the gnarliest trails though...

The seats in my truck are plenty comfortable, and a few days without showering will encourage social distancing.
Just checked my email. This sucks, but I guess it was inevitable.

They got that handled too.

the Southeast Utah Health Department on Tuesday banned anyone other than “essential visitors” and “primary residents” from checking into overnight accommodations or camping on private or public lands. The order applies to dispersed camping and BLM campgrounds, but not Canyonlands’ campgrounds, which are in San Juan County outside the health department’s jurisdiction.
