I'm with you. Still have mine laying in the bed. Don't like the idea of it up on the roof or in the bed rack or somewhere else high either. I know you played with this. Do you think re-routing the exhaust then partially deflating a 37 and stuffing it up underneath would work?DamageWagon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:07 pmThe problems with geometry of a swingout on our trucks comes from the tire. If you have a 35” or smaller you don’t need to relocate the spare tire. So a bumper tire carrier is only for 37-40” tires. If you set a tire of that size on your bumper, you can see that in order to not have the tire itself kill your departure angle (ripping it off coming down a rock ledge would suck) you have to put the tire pretty high up. The tire ends up so high that it blocks part of your rear view. You can’t really keep it short and stubby in any way.
You could find some ways to make it work well and maybe someone will. I think a better solution exists.

Same... mines in the bed ratcheted down. On the occasional time I need the full bed i take it out. I carry a tire patch kit and hope for the best.TommyG wrote:I'm with you. Guess what, they fold into your bed the moment you tap them. That's what it's for.
I do get the need/want for the tire carrier. Doesn't work for my applicaiton.
My point is, the bumper needs improve functionality, not just be a steel bar that's stronger than stock. Backup sensors, tag mount/lights, trailer plug can't just go away.

Yes if you’re willing to make another compromise. You have to either ditch the tow hitch or if you’ve got a 03-13 you can chop the frame crossmember. Again not a great solution, especially ditching factory hitch. That’s been advertised a few times by companies offering a bumper with built in hitch, but man, these trucks get used to pull serious weight all the time. These aren’t Tacoma’s. Replicating a Class IV hitch is accepting some real liability.
Re: New Rear Bumper?
I still don't get it, the only time I back up is to pull someone else out and that's if I can't get em with the winch. Don't even need a bumper back there just a hitch. Hahaha

Re: New Rear Bumper?
Gotcha. Tow hitch is out, we pull a travel trailer often. I may still end up trying the Thuren bumper with a swing out and taking a chance on it. Honestly that scares me less than notching the frame. Thanks for walking me through it. I learn something worth while here every time I sign in.DamageWagon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 17, 2019 6:46 pmTommyG wrote:I'm with you. Still have mine laying in the bed. Re: New Rear Bumper?
It does actually. The tire carrier is always going to suck; it's going to either block your your view and add weight above the bed rails or it's going to reduce departure angle (or both). If it's an accessory you can take it off and not be inconvenienced by it 100% of the time.DamageWagon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 17, 2019 6:44 pmWhich does nothing to address the issues of the tire carrierReloaderguy wrote:Make the swingout removeable and an accessory to the bumper...mind blown!DamageWagon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:07 pmThe problems with geometry of a swingout on our trucks comes from the tire. Tapatalk just shows the last picture in the thread. Quotes or no quotes, until somebody posts something different.....
I know it’s a pretty casual atmosphere around here, but it’s seemed like lately there’s been a lot of off topic derailments. Sex toys, innuendos, homophobic remarks, etc. I like this place a lot more when we just talk about trucks.
