17 dual alternator install

Post by HeavyDuty » Sun Sep 10, 2017 9:48 pm

So I ended up getting everything I wanted on my wagon except for dual alternators. Does anyone know what's involved with installing dual alternators?

Are there any aftermarket kits? You could see what the parts cost from the Stealer, but I bet its a hell of lot more then the 395.00 upgrade cost. Obviously you need some brackets and a different belt, the real question is what you have to do with the wiring. I can check mine out when it gets here. But thats 6-7 weeks.

I have done some looking and am not finding much. I was hoping another member had done or researched this. I'm hoping all it entails is a bracket, alternator, belt, and harness.

Yea, thats pretty much it. I think you have to reflash computer too? Check reloaderguy's build page, I am pretty sure he has some info in there about it as he was looking into it as well. Wanna say it was around $750 worth of parts.

Reloaderguy wrote:For anyone interested, I've been working with Benny at All Mopar Parts to source the OE parts necessary to upgrade to factory dual alternators. The option is $400 when ordered from the factory. Based on the parts needed it looks like about a $700 upgrade aftermarket. This should be the same for all 2015-2017 Power Wagons as long as you have the factory 220A alternator option. Diesel guys have done this upgrade and said it is fairly simple and only requires a dealer to add the correct sales code (XF5 for gas trucks).

Not too bad of a price, considering the cost of this one ( https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/Dodge~Ra ... 70-xp.html ) & it is 110 amps less than the 2 together.

That's the one I've been running for a few years now, I've always been happy with it but I'd love if there was a dual alternator option for the 5.7's
Central Texas and Houston area
2009 5.7 auto quadcab
Carli 3” coils deaver leafs 3” kings with 4 tube bypass rear and fr/rr hydro bumps

Creative fab trussed axle. rem polished and cryoed 5.13 gears with arb lockers fr/rr
Sharadon stage 2 545rfe with 3000 stall edge converter

Yup, I'm running that one too. No complaints, but I too wish they had dual alt's on the 5.7.

I'm in this same boat. I got everything except dual alternators. It's next thing on my list. Did we land on a resolution? I was going to just go ask the dealer if they could convert it. Not sure what they'll say but i like to go in with some information.

Dual battery setup and a high amp alternator is a bit cheaper and a faster install time. ;)

I'm with Mike. A good, serious duty alternator would beat dualsnin my mind. I would rather have a single good component than two okay components, particularly when it comes to batteries. Otherwise when one starts to go it commonly kills the other too. If you need more amps when winching just idle up with your foot. I would have loved more juice the last few times I was winching trees, but I'd never pay even the cost of a second battery to get it. Hundreds or thousands of dollars isn't worth ten minutes of my time when using a slower winch.

I would go upgraded alternator if I was not getting duals on my new truck. Extra battery is really heavy, upgrading the alternator is easy, however expensive. My trail rig does great with a bigger alternator and one battery.

But if your ordering new....FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CHECK THAT 295.00 BOX!

I didn't order. Lucked across my exact truck, even color, without dual alternators. I did get a few things I didnt necessarily want, cargo camera, adjustable pedals, push button start. Not against any of those extras, just wasn't on my list and i don't find them necessary.

Dealer says the upgrade to dual alternators isn't possible... to much change in wiring. I actually don't believe the answer...

Sounds like a typical dealer. In other words they don't want to bother and don't have the talent to run some wires.

A higher output aftermarket alternator is less expensive and will have less parasitic power draw on the accessory pulleys.

You happen to know the highest amperage aftermarket alternator? Can it get near 380A? Do you still have to flash the computer?

Looks like you can go upnto 320Amp on a single alt. Kinda makes dual alts redundant (ha!). Anyone know the difference between Idle Amp and Max? I'm guessing Idle is at idle and Max is with the engine revving hard. I think i have the 180Amp OEM but i don't know if thats at idle or max...

$750.00 Pft.

If you know a good alternator & starter shop, they can usually rebuild/upgrade them to a higher output using a kit for half that cost. We had a place in Tampa that I used that rebuilt my 180 on our Trailblazer to a 260 unit. Cost me under $200

Or get a kit and do it youself.
