Thinking of doing wheels when I replace the tires this fall. Beyond the light on the dash which I have had for years and don't mind, is there any adverse operation triggered by running aftermarket wheels with no sensors? I know I won't see tire pressures on the dash - don't mind that.

Thinking I am just going to sell the OEM wheels with the tires on them and don't want to mess with the sensors if I don't have to. They should get snapped up pretty quick here locally.

To my PA brothers - will it pass Inspection with completely inoperable TPMS?

I can't speak to passing inspection. When I ordered new wheels / tires, I just ordered them with sensors in and tires mounted and balanced. I used my AEV Procal to set the alarm at a min of 35 psi. That is what I run my rears at, so no alarms until I air down for off road.

My tpms saved me fender when I had a fast leak on the highway. If my tpms didn't start yelling at me, it probably would have shreaded the tire into my fender before I noticed (been there done that in a different truck).

But to each there own.

TireRack states "No" for PA. Not required to operate.

You would be better off getting the Alphaodb software and changing the thresholds in the computer then deleting it entirely. I set mine for 45 psi as that is what I run most of the time.

Since I tow a travel trailer having the TPMS is fairly important.

I am going to grab Alpha OBD eventually but it won't do me any good with TPMS if the new wheels don't have any sensors in them.

Just have them move the sensors from your old wheels when you get them mounted. Then you keep the sensors and don't have to go through a re-learning process.

I wouldn't eliminate them. Heck, I use them to monitor tire temps when running long stretches air'd down (less than 20 psi).

Yeah, I find the TPMS helpful when the seasons change. I take a peek to see if I need to up the pressure in any of the tires without having to get a guage out. Also, I have Alpha OBD in addition to Procal, but have never had to reprogram after I did the low pressure setting on Procal, regardless of what the instruction said about the permanency. The Alpha OBD does more so it is a better value. Hindsight is 20/20 they say.

One other thing. I've changed sensors twice (I have a '13). Once on my stock wheels just because they were end of life. There is a battery in each sensor that eventually dies, like any battery. They didn't all go out at once, so the cost was spread out. And then when I bought the new rim/tire combo. Considering the overall investment, it was only a little more to have them installed. They self program when you get up to speed for a mile or so. I also recommend preordering a ceramic coat on your new rims. Again, just a little more to protect the investment. So far I haven't had to scrub my rims. They seem to come clean with a regular car wash. They barely hold any dirt build up as it is.

I haven't had tire sensors in years. Never had a problem with state inspection either.

TPMS and smart phones. What would we ever do....Russ?

Not worried about the lights. They don't bother me. Don't want to break the exiting tires off of the factory wheels just to get the TMPS sensors out so they can be mounted in the new wheels before we mount the new tires. My main concern was the lack of sensors kicking off some other safety nanny after I have sold off my old wheels with the sensors in them.

Third party TPMS sensors will work. You might need to clear and clear the rf list to get them to register, which requires a tool or dealer.

I’ve driven around with three sensors and had no problem with other systems. Just annoying idiot lights.

I would bet if you are having discount tire do the work for you they would gladly swap the sensors out. Its only a matter of breaking one bead then airing back up

Ended up going without the sensors. Loving life. Get a service warning then just a solid light on the dash like I have had for years.
