37 Tire in a 7' Garage?

Post by FLtoCOTransplant » Sat Jun 01, 2019 2:04 am

When I test drove the PW my wife commented that the tires were too small (she is from the south and grew up in a truck family). You all say just go to 37s...I want to make the jump. I do have one concern about the vehicle height w/37s. Our garage door is 7' with a little plastic lip that I am willing to trim to get the full 7' opening.

Tire math does not seem to be as easy as 33" stock tire sets the truck at a height of 81", 37" tire sets the truck at a height of 83".

You all have taught me that every vehicle is different with tire make, model and pressure. If anyone does have a combination that fits, even if just barely, let me know. I won't push it in any other garage except my own.

Truck should be here in late June and want to quickly trade out wheels and tires. Appreciate the info! A bigger tire is going on either way.

 Rich

I'm fairly sure your math is off. I won't go in a parking garage under 7'3". I think I can maybe clear a 7'2" or 7'1" MAYBE... but not a 7.

I should have emphasized “not”. I know it is off but I was hopeful. TankerZac your post from March of 17 where you said 35 Toyo RTs cleared a 6’10” garage gave me hope. 2 for 2 on not fitting, not looking promising.

I've pretty much abandoned any hope of getting it into my garage. I'm just hoping that if I carefully back in I can get the truck nearly level before I have to stop to keep from striking the door, but I haven't tried it.

If I do another house it will have taller doors and a deeper garage.

I go into 7' parking garages and car washes on the regular, only one time did I nudge the pipe with cab over lights.

Granted residential garages are different because most the time the door hangs down a 2"-4" below the framed garage door opening.

Based on the above posts I'd say your results may very but it will be very close.

I am on 37” Toyo MT’s and sit as tall as these trucks can without having issues (~3” over power wagon stock). I have a radio antenna base in the center of my cab that adds ~1.5”. I clear my 7’ garage door by quite a bit in either orientation, however I’ve got some slope on the entry that helps a lot. Empty everything from the truck and pull your truck in and see where the closest point is to the door. If you ONLY plan on changing tires, and not suspension, then it’s basically just simple math. If you’re within 1/4” on the math you’d be in the danger zone. If you’ve got another inch it shouldn’t matter what tire you pick.

Or buy 40” KO2’s and you’ll clear for sure.

i was literally thinking of fabing up a pulley system to pull the front end down with the winch to clear the many garages i enter often and barely clear now with 35s.
moving to 37s that may ruin the perfect clearance i have right now, but never thought about airing down.
i wonder the overall height difference on 37s if i go from 50-40-30-20-10 psi.

The 7' limit and my truck with 35's is too close for comfort - a pothole/bump would be disastrous... My last power wagon on 35's scraped the satellite antenna.. I vote 7'3" min for 37's..

Yep, my old one was 6'11" on thuren springs and Hankook 37's with about half tread. A good MT will change from "37" to "35ish" through the life of the tire.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Fixed that for you.
