Cooper or Maxxis?
Cooper or Maxxis?
It's time for a tire upgrade! The truck came with 33" Ironman AT, but I need bigger tires and an MT. I will be going with 37x12.50r17. I was initially set on Cooper STT Pro's as I have read so much good stuff about them, especially for the price. I had a set of 35" Cooper MTP on my 1500 and they were great so I have been wanting to try the STT Pro for quite some time. I just recently did quite a bit of research on Maxxis Razr MT and came across a lot of good reviews so they might be in the ball game. I know there are many other great MT's out there but most are much more expensive and/or heavier than the STT. I'm not sure what the weight of the Maxxis is, but might be similar to the STT.
What do you guys think between these 2 options?

Re: Cooper or Maxxis?
I have the STT pros in the stock size, been a good tire so far, 26000 miles and 12/32 tread left. They are wearing evenly, I rotate them every 5000 miles. I did tear a side lug on a wheeling trip in west Texas, but no air leaked. The tire is still on the truck with no issues.

I've got the 37-1250-r17 STT Pros, great tire and after 5k miles they still look great and aren't very noisy.
A little heads up the the 12.50" wide is closer to 13" wide. I've got them on stock wheels with no width issues.

I'm assuming you have a little rub on the control arm and sway bar at full lock? Seems like with stock wheels they only rub a little on those parts.EasyDoesIt wrote: ↑Mon Oct 22, 2018 8:18 pmI've got the 37-1250-r17 STT Pros, great tire and after 5k miles they still look great and aren't very noisy.

I got the Cooper STT 35's when they first came out. Great tire. Never had an issue with them.

You got it, just rub at full lock. I had to trim a little plastic and beat back a pinch weld but that took all of 30minutes.16PW wrote: ↑Mon Oct 22, 2018 11:04 pmI'm assuming you have a little rub on the control arm and sway bar at full lock? I wonder if the 2018 rims have a different offset than the steel rims. I read some guys have no rubbing on plastic or pinch weld with the stock steel rims on 14+. Did you just hammer away at the pinch weld or cut it too?

Re: Cooper or Maxxis?
I got some of the STT Pros on my truck this year, and so far they have been outstanding. I have 315 70 R17 size, and I replaced the control arms on my 2012. They have been really good off road. I am looking forward to taking them into the woods hunting this fall. I am looking to test out the mud/snow capabilities.

Re: Cooper or Maxxis?
As far as reviews go, they are supposed to be great in the mud and pretty good in the snow/ice for it being an MT.ghaugo wrote: ↑Wed Oct 24, 2018 10:00 pmI got some of the STT Pros on my truck this year, and so far they have been outstanding. Cooper or Maxxis?
Stock steel wheels. I know... it’s an 11-13 year truck but for illustration purposes.

Thanks for clarifying. I have read about stock steelies all throughout the forum so I just assumed.Rodeoflyer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 9:10 amStock steel wheels. I know... it’s an 11-13 year truck but for illustration purposes.

Well, those might be stock steel wheels for a Ram truck, but the power wagon was never offered with them.16PW wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 9:18 amThanks for clarifying. Re: Cooper or Maxxis?
I've heard great things about Maxxis tires, although I have no personal experience with them.
However, I do have 37" Cooper S/T MAXX's on my truck, which are the same tire as the STT PRO, aside from the tread-pattern. They've been a great tire. They're both made in the USA, if that matters to you, and both have a special reinforced 3-ply sidewall. They ride comfortable and stable on the road, even at 32PSI with a lightly loaded/empty truck. Both also have a relatively soft tread compound, which is great for traction on and off-road, although at a reduced lifespan.
If you want something really aggressive, the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC Radial might be worth a look. Mickey Thompson is owned by Cooper Tire, and the Baja Claw TTC Radial has the same special 3-ply sidewall as the S/T MAXX and STT PRO. They're also $100 off a set right now.
Depending on how you plan to use your truck, I would strongly recommend considering the Cooper S/T MAXX, especially if you do a lot of driving on the road. They're a hybrid between an aggressive A/T and an M/T. They look great, are much quieter than an M/T (even with studs), work much better in the snow than an M/T, and still work fantastic in the mud(been there, done that).
Also, keep in mind that only a dedicated winter tire with a soft tread compound and studs, such as the Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2, will work well on ice. Even my studded S/T MAXX's are just okay in that regard.
Of the two you listed, my vote is for the STT PRO.
Also, the Power Wagon was never equipped with steel wheels from the factory, aside from the spare.

37 Cooper STT Pro's are finally on! It's amazing how big these tires are in person compared to stock size. I was really surprised how much higher the truck seems. These 37's look right at home on power wagons.I have the obvious rub on the control arm and sway bar, but no rubbing on plastic.
