2018, stock wheels, stock gears, and 5500-7000ft elevation

Post by KevinABQ » Wed Oct 17, 2018 6:22 pm

I vaguely remember this being discussed in the past, but I can't find it.

I'm fairly sure I can fit 37sx12.5" with only minor rubbing using the stock wheels on a 2018. With 35s there should be no issue. Or so I remember being told.

The more complex part is I remember people suggesting that running 37s at the elevation I live at without regearing is not going to produce satisfactory results. I don't tow or run around with huge loads in the bed, it's just the truck alone and few hundred pounds of assorted junk bolted to or carried in the truck. Any thoughts as to whether 37s will work satisfactorily or not?

Depends on how picky you are.

Boldadventures tows an airstream all over with that setup.

I do too. I only even think about it towing 8500lbs up hills but I'm still at speed. Not towing I never think about it and the mpg is better.

In comparison, 33's to 35's is less noticeable from your perception. It's like riding around with another passenger. You don't notice it compared to riding around by yourself.

But load your truck up with 4 buddies and all your camping and fishing gear for the weekend. You'll notice that.

That's how going to 37's feels. You notice the drag on the truck more at stop lights and things.

The the best way I know how to describe it without getting into the weeds talking about rotational mass and what not.

It’s very useful to get how it feels driving.

The detail measurements don’t tell you how it feels. It’s like knowing that you need to apply 175 ft/pounds of torque doesn’t tell someone how hard they have to pull the wrench if they haven’t done it before.

I will also add it doesn't feel sluggish at all. It feels truck-like. But it's not a turbo feeling either. If I minded it at all i'd have done gears 8 months ago.
