Alaska Earthquake

Post by RustyPW » Fri Nov 30, 2018 3:25 pm

Just heard about the 7.0 earthquake in Alaska. Some of the pictures look bad. Hoping all of our members up there are ok.

Here's a website with up to date earthquakes on the global.

My family is fine up here - a lot more hoopla about it than it really deserves IMHO. Some damage but not as bad as it would be other places, as Alaska in general factors earthquakes into designs after the Good Friday earthquake of 1964. The picture with the stranded car on the off ramp is about 1/2 mile from my house in Anchorage!

Some minor damage to the house and a big mess to clean up at my place. Still without power, but otherwise ok.

Shoot me a PM if you need help with anything. We have a little 1000W genset if you need to use it. I’ve found out that Eagle River and Chugiak got slammed relative to Anchorage where I live, so I misspoke earlier assuming the media was overreacting!

Lights just came back on, crews are still working on other parts of ER. I live up in the ER valley and thankfully have everything I need to outlast the initial quake panic.

Up until recently we had a house in ER on Glacier View Drive, but the bears got so bad we decided to move into Anchorage. We have really small children and they don’t mix well with that wild of an area.

I’m glad that power was restored and that things should hopefully be back to normal soon!

The news reported it was a 7.2 but some are calling it an Alaskan 8.

The news here had it at a 6.8, then upped to 7.2. Then down to a 7.

Glad everyone is ok. Yeah, if that was in san fran, there would likely be more than 10x the damage & bad injuries as well. Big tall buildings & dense population is the reason why.

Being prepared is a trait that most PW owners have in common. We have a lot of Amish around us. If the power goes out, there is no gas, etc. , it just business as usual for them. Although that too is slowly changing. Their construction crews have a hired driver & they use a generator for their power tools.

Hope there is no more aftershocks or worse.

Thousands of aftershocks so far. Hundreds over 2.5, which is strong enough to feel.
Seems like the worst is over and the aftershocks are slowing down in frequency and magnitude.
Anchorage is mostly done with their damage assessment, port is operational and most have power back. A few great big holes in the roads to fix, and a few new ones popping up with aftershocks.

I went wheeling yesterday since the power was back on and the port was OK. Had enough of my dang house shaking.

I have some cracks in the walls, a countertop separated from the backsplash that will need to get shimmed and recaulked. The garage man-door dead bolt is damaged so I can’t even open it to see if the door still opens and closes.

I rent, so not my house, not my problem.

The well water ran murky for a while, and is still producing more sand than usual.

We will probably never know if the events on Nov 11th, had anything to do with the earthquake event on Nov 30th.

What a weekend!! I work for the local water and sewer utility. We have been busy fixing broken pipes since the quake.

I had planned on wheeling with Low_Sky on Saturday but the emergency killed those plans.

Our house that we rent came out with very minor sheetrock cracks and some broken decorations my wife had on top of the kitchen cabinets.
