Ford's 10 speed auto....

Post by TwinStick » Mon Feb 05, 2018 3:14 am

So, here is my question: Do you think a 10 speed auto that was geared as follows:
1) 5.69:1
2) 4.69:1
3) 3.69:1
4) 3.0:1
5) 2.69:1
6) 2.0:1
7) 1.69:1
8) 1.0:1
9) 0.85:1
10) 0.67:1

Would get that much worse mpg than these ratio's ? http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2016/09/20 ... ssion.html

I do not think it would, but I DO THINK the first set of gear ratio's I posted would make make for a MUCH BETTER working/towing truck. What say you ?
In WNY State. 2008 Red QC PW G56. No lift yet, stock size tires. It pulls an 18' 2016 Starcraft AR One Extreme, 3500 lbs.
Load Pro 35 helper springs. 2015 A.R.E. MX Series custom cap. PCP front diff cover protector. Mag-Hytec 6 qt rear diff cover. K&N replacement air filter only. Dual grounded throttle body. Winch TPC bypass. Fab Four rear bumper. DURA BAK lined rocker protection. And a bunch of new front end stuff.

G-56 Gear ratios: 1st) 6.29:1 2nd) 3.48:1 3rd) 2.10:1 4th) 1.38:1 5th) 1.0:1 6th) 0.79:1 Rev 6.29:1 --- = 78.01613:1 Crawl Ratio
-------------------------5.94:1--------3.28:1-------1.98:1-------1.31:1-------1.0:1-------0.74:1-----5.42:1 ---- = 73.675:1
545RFE----------------3.0:1---------1.67:1--------1.0:1--------0.75:1-------0.67:1------------------3.0:1 -------=37.21:1

2013+ 32.47 crawl ratio...............Can you see the trend ??????????????

Those posted ratios are not distributed correctly for a transmission... (they're not even reasonably distributed)

First and Second are too close
Fourth and Fifth are too close
Fifth and Sixth are too far apart
Sixth and Seventh are too close
Seventh and Eighth are too far apart

Aside from these issues, the fuel mileage would be worse for a highway vehicle - consider adding another overdrive...

We had better fire the guy that came up with those

I wish I had gears inbetween the ones I have in my truck, for HD work. That's why i was curious.

That would be SUPER for light to med duty work though.

And...overdrive is useless on a pick up truck that tows heavy or is actually used for work, with a gas engine. Empty, yes. Loaded up, no. The only time i use 6th gear towing is going down hill or if a REALLY strong wind is at my back. I guess my experience is different. I wonder which one would up shift & downshift more ?

To get what you really want - It would be great to have a 3-speed Transfer case. Swap out the BorgWarner 44-47 to get:

Low Range (what we currently have)
Creeper Gear Highway Range (new TwinStick range :poke: )
High Range (what we currently have)
2014 Power Wagon Laramie
Titan V5 2.5" Receiver Pintle Hook
Warn wireless winch controller
.188" DOM White Knuckle Rock Sliders
Locker Bypass

LOL, You would think so, right ? When I towed our 10,500 lb 30' Toy Hauler, for 9 years, there was too much of a drop between most gears, (even with the G-56) even on flat land but especially on hills. We are rockin' an NV271 in our 3rd Gens. Still have a 2.72:1 Lo range in ours, vs the 2.64:1 in the current ones.
