I'd give my left nut for a ride in one of those, here are some pics from Fleet Week on San Francisco Bay from a few years back, I didn't take them but they are cool. Check out the people on the boats, they have no idea what's just about to happen...

In the last photo, I used the pilots helmet as a measurable item, and guestimate the rear of the plane is 18' off the water.

So, is suspect the pilot has: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ3tqIukBKg

If you don't know what's coming, that will scare the crap out of you. I was hunting a few years ago near the Chocolate Mountains in the So Cal desert and a couple of Navy/Marine jets came over from behind me on a practice bombing run (Chocolate Mountains is their range). They were several hundred feet up and I didn't hear them until they were past me. It was way beyond scary.

Luke AFB is 70 miles south of Prescott, and the Gladen/Bagdad Military Operating Area extends for miles to the south and west of town. We've been out walking while quail hunting, and watched F-16's use our trucks as gun targets, and you sure hope the safety is on. Buggars make a mock straffing pass, put on a good show, and head on out. A fraction of a second before they go overhead, you hear compressor whine, and then the roar...

It's also fun to go down to the Goldwater MOA, and watch the mock dog fights - day or night it's a hoot.

I've been buzzed two times , once in a boat in the middle of Lake Berryessa and once in the middle of the Sonoran Desert in Mexico during a trip to Mazatlan, we're standing along the highway taking a leak when a NAVY jet came by about a 100 ft. off the deck and about 200 yds. away, literally scaring the piss out of us.

For those of you in So Cal or southern AZ, the Blue Angels spend their winters at El Centro NAF. About one hour west of Yuma or two hours east of San Diego. You can watch them practice if you time it right.

We were driving north on 86S a couple of years ago and watched a jet doing tailstands at about 1000 feet above the desert floor near Mecca. Thing would be almost stationary, pointed straight up, over and over again. Don't understand why it didn't stall or flame out. We assumed it was a Blue Angels pilot, but the plane did not have the paint job.

Depending on the type of aircraft it is possible that the thrust to weight ratio is such that it could do a tail stand and actually accelerate going straight up. That being said the F/A-18 Hornet could possibly do that for a little bit but would run out of steam eventually. I know this because I have done it.. :patriot:

This guy was doing it, but the tailstands were more impressive than the vertical acceleration. Huge balls.

Believe it or not. The F/A-18's were capable of tail stands back in 1986. Fly by wire technology helped bring on the tail stands.
