Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Has anyone ever done this ? I would like to turn my 13 hp Ariens into a 22-23 hp monster. I can literally throw the snow over my garage & into my neighbors back yard now. I think it would be cool to be able to throw it over my house as well, or just idle while clearing my driveway LOL .

Just use a blown Busa motor. You'll have all the HP you will ever need.

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Does a snow blower rely on rpm more to throw the snow? I ask because all the horsepower in the world doesn't matter in certain applications, but a little more HP and a lot more rpms provide huge gains.

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
No, not rpm's, just like a truck, torque is what moves the snow, at least for 2 stage snow blowers. The single stage ones turn a much higher rpm. If the snow is light, I can almost idle right through it now, but not the heavy stuff. My driveway is long & my house is right on the one side of driveway & the neighbors basement leaks & he don't like it if I blow the snow there, so I gotta blow it all to either the street end or my back yard end & even if we only get 6", by the time it is all at one end or the other, there is a lot of heavy, already blown snow. So, double the torque would help me send it much farther at 3600 rpm yet i could idle through deeper stuff at lower rpm. I'm not looking for something crazy, just a much bigger V-twin, I think that would do the job nicely. Just wondering if anyone has done it ?

I like the Hemi one the best. Haha.
Anyway, there is a ton of things you can do to add HP, especially if you go with a Briggs. A simple hand grind .020" off the heads and some port work really helps them. I'd say go for it.

They look cool. They are loud. They are heavy. They will throw the snow 100'+. But they are NOT practical at all.

The thought of pushing a 600 pound snowblower around my yard to make things go faster just doesn't add up to me.

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Yeah, I'm with you on that. The 22 hp Predator HF engine is only 30 lbs heavier than the one that is on there now. That is doable in my mind. Plus mine is self propelled, no pushing or pulling. 6 forward & 2 reverse gears. I really don't need more power, it's just that now I am retired, so, it seems like a fun little project, for when i have nothing else to do. If that day ever comes !
Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
I added 2 of these today to my snowblower. http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... -worklight They turn night into day. It was the easiest hook up ever.
I used this http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... _vc=IOPDP1 and this http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produc ... _vc=IOPDP1 . It took me longer to find a place to mount them, & drill the holes. Turned out great. They really do turn night into day. I pointed it in the backyard, hit the switch & it lit up the entire backyard and my neighbors. Quality kit, quality connectors, at least it seems that way. We will see in a year or 2 how they hold up. Made in China but it says they are Cree leds.

Thanks for the info and links. Do you feel one of the lights would be plenty? Or was it a symmetrical thing

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
One would be fine, however, I installed 2, hoping to ward off some VERY close calls I have had this year. It seems that some play a game: to see how close they can get to you when you are snowblowing. I can't think of any other reason. Every time they say "damn dude, I didn't even see you !" Well, there's a g-damn street light right in front of my house, so even if I had no lights, they should still be able to see me. I am gonna start wearing my motorcycle jacket also when using the snowblower. Looks something like this: http://dungarees.net/product_Carhartt_1 ... wAodXdoCtQ People are just f-ing ass-***** these days. & yeah, then there's the whole symmetrical thing. It would have been much more difficult on my snowblower to mount one in the middle.

Twinstick, are you going to be pointing those new super bright LED lights directly into the eyes of said fawkwads?

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Besides the impeller design, I have heard that the size and design of the chute has a lot to do with how well the snowblowers blow snow.
I know the older, larger chutes were pretty pathetic and many of the newer ones have smaller chutes for better snow velocity.
We had a Honda blower for some time, it worked very well but just way too slow for the area I want to keep clear (almost 1 acre....).
Here is my John Deere "snow scoop" :

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
Nice JD. I am in the city, so tractor would not be practical for me. The Ariens I have works pretty darn good. 13 hp & will throw 60', depending on snow type. It is 36" wide, 4-5 swipes & driveway is done. But when the kids were home with their cars, I also had to do the front yard for 1 & out front for the other. When they bury the end of my driveway with the big truck plow, it gets a good workout. I also have a fire hydrant out front that I keep clear, so it moves a LOT of snow. I have thought about the impeller mod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XLOCtrAYZc but am not sure it would be worth the effort, for an extra 5' or less. Maybe once I have nothing else to do & get bored, but I am not going to hold my breath for that to happen !

A snow blower just isn't going to keep up here either. I use my 3038 with a 305 loader and AG tires.yooper68 wrote:...

Thats crazy!

Re: Hot Rodding your snowblower ?
No, not with a 40 mph wind. It does depend on snow condition though. The wet heavy stuff about 10'. The good packing stuff a little further, maybe 15-20'. The fluffy stuff I can throw from my backyard, over my garage & into my neighbors back yard, 50-60'.
This is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJKbLiY-hu8 This is a 10 hp. Mine is a 13 hp.

Holy cow that thing really zings the snow! My John Deere 17 HP V-twin with 44" blower doesnt do anywhere near that good.TwinStick wrote:No, not with a 40 mph wind. Did you read the start of that video, though? Sounds like he had quite a bit of mods done to it... and it still wasnt 60'
Honest to gosh I had no idea people modified their snow blowers haha.
