Going to be in the Denver area for Christmas

Post by RustyPW » Sun Dec 18, 2016 9:17 pm

Hi guys. Wife and I are going to the Denver area for Christmas. We are going to see the kids and grandkids. We should be in Denver this Thursday, and leaving for Bloomfield NM on the 27th. We will be in the Bloomfield area for New Years to see the youngest son. Leaving there for home around the 2nd or 3rd. So, if anyone wants to meet up. Post up please. We'll be driving the PW. Didn't want to take a chance with the motorhome and bad weather.

Little bit of headwind out there in the flat land? Maybe you'll get lucky and it will keep up for the trip home so it evens out.

Kansas is always bad for fuel mileage no matter what I drive through that state going either way. :jawdrop: PW, GC, motorhome, motorcycle, sportscar. It's all bad.

Westbound I-80 through Wyoming, Cheyenne to Rock Springs, is where I get the photo-worthy mpg's... :poke:
40m/h+ headwind the whole way to Idaho.

On the way to salt lake, with trailer last week, running the truck at 80 percent.... Cold, cross wind, and chugging fuel! Had the trailer lift the rear tire many times when we were forced to slow down. Drove on untreated ice covered roads for a few hundred miles, just horribly too slow for me....

Sometimes, it's bad in the summer too. With the rain, high winds, hail, and such. :jawdrop:

Made it down to Bloomfield NM on the 27th. 4ft of snow on the ground at Chama NM. Coming across the pass on RT17 was fun at night. In 4wheel drive going up. 5 car wreck on the pass by La Veta. 2 killed. :( That held us up for 3 hrs. Leaving for Wichita Ks. tomorrow. Then hopefully home.

Riddle me this one my fellow PW'ers. My PW must be tuned weird from the factory. I get my best fuel mileage above 6,000ft. And worst at 1000ft and below. In the mountains out west, I was getting 14+ mpg. :D Around the Mississippi River valley. 9.0 mpg. Both areas, speeds was around 70 to 75 mph.

Lots of variables to consider:
What octane fuel were you running?
Ethanol or non ethanol?
Tailwind or headwind?
industrial-air-controls-34-728.jpg
Lower air pressure at altitude means lower compression and less pinging which would allow the computer to advance the timing more, resulting in more power and less throttle required = better MPG.
Sometimes there's pinging we can't hear, but the knock sensor can hear it and trims back the timing advance, so we compensate with more pressure on the right pedal.
That's my theory anyway. I'd be willing to listen to what others have to say. :geek:

Or maybe it was just a bad batch of dilithium crystals in your flux capacitor.

Was running 10% corn, 89 oct. the whole time.

Made it home today. :excited: Put 4047 miles on the PW. Have to do an oil change, grease job, and tire rotation now. The PW ran good the whole time. No hic-ups. Think I need some N2 in my shocks tho. The Hemi sounded like a smoker when I first fired it up on 10F mornings. Might be the Hemi tick, or broken exhaust stud. Have to wait until the weather warms up again in July.
