Set up a chat room?

Post by bstefanic » Thu Dec 01, 2016 12:16 am

I'm no website expert in anyway...but how hard would it be to add a chat room tab here? DTX has one and it offers a good bullshit spot to throw around ideas with folks instead of clobbering up the forums, i.e. the 20th thread if 35" tires will fit. If nothing else ask the question and someone can direct them or just shoot the shit

I will talk to Leif and see what we can do/get. But yes, I think we have grown to a size that we can look into what it will take.

I setup a slack channel for all my fulltime friends. And built an automated signup form wanderslack.com

If any of you use slack. I use it for work, and then friends, so I'm on it every day anyways.

If you want, I can help setup the same thing again.

I'll discuss it with Leif. It sounds like an interesting idea, however how many will actually utilize it? Slack seems to be the logical choice, and it integrates with phBB. I believe it has an issue with additional auth (not federated), such as a private subforum such as when creating a private chatroom, but I don't think anyone *here* will care about that.

Wonderslack.com is a separate entity which takes it out of the forum scope.

Maybe we'll integrate GitHub so we can order a pizza while chatting! lol

I'll get back to you...

No I built wanderslack, it's not for use. But I repo'd the app: https://github.com/devbymike/slack-invite-app - running it off heroku.

I'd wonder how many would use it too in this group?

Right now I have close to 304 members and a core group of about only 7 people online everyday. Is it worth it? I dunno.

That's what we need to evaluate, return on investment, and in this case, investment on the time to install, configure, testing, maintenance, etc. I'm sure once it's installed, it just runs itself. As a professional in the field, what are your thoughts as if you were the PM for this?

The least investment is to create a slack channel, and if someone wants an invite, send it to them. :) I needed a way to let others invite fellow travelers to the channel automatically when I wasn't around. I'd think we'd rather our group channel be more private at first.

Creating a new team is as simple as: https://slack.com/create#email

Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with how the invite part works. I'm in agreement that it must be private.

I think it may be a good value-add but only as an integrated phpBB solution to utilize forum IDM for ease of access, including branding that everyone currently identifies with.

Thanks, Mike. If you have additional info, please ping me offline using email.

Thanks again. Good suggestion. :-)

Thanks

After researching it more, I see that Slack has an issue with full phpBB integration, which points to an external discussion area out side of the forum.
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2339831

There are phpBB direct full integration options providing more of an IRC type channel that we're looking at.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know or PM me.

Thanks.

IRC works well.
Loads of web clients (mibbit, cgi:irc) that can be embedded on webpages. Not sure about username integration with an existing forum database...
Services (nickserv, chanserv) allow registration of usernames and channels on the server/network.

And for those of us that idle in there all day, you can use use a local client to connect.

Hi Mule,

There are a few that exist that we're looking at that offers integration. Have you used any of them?

My last integration where with vbulletin. Problem I had on that site was the live chat ate up server load because it was php based. IRC though is baked into a lot of servers or easy to setup if on a linux based server like CentOS or Ubuntu. But don't have much experience as of late in that dept. I sold off my forum in 2008.

Never anything with those. Last one I ever really dealt with (and mostly on user/moderator-side) was IPBoard's IP.chat on ThumperTalk.
I manage a few channels, small ones for friends, "unofficial" rooms of sorts on the NightStar network.

A easy and free app is Line you can create and chat in private groups and individually with members. I've used it before and it works really well.

Bmuping an old thread... Anyone using Discord? Could set up a server on there real quick.

Web app, mobile apps. Works fairly well, lots of convenient features.
