Why a 1911?

Post by 2011TXPowerWagon » Sat Jun 20, 2015 9:22 am

What makes a 1911 so desirable? I would love to own one, but not exactly sure why. If that makes sense?

I used to own a Colt. There is just something about a high quality, precision machined, and classic firearm I appreciate. Beautiful guns.

Yet, from a purely functional standpoint, I carry a Glock. Maybe it was when Chuck Taylor came to class with a Glock dragging behind his Jeep on a rope, stopped, stuck a magazine in it, fired at a target, holstered it, and turned to the class and asked "Who wants to do that with a 1911?"

Dennis Miller "You can't order black coffee anymore. It's un-creamed..."
I'm just along for the ride...

The 1911 is just an iconic gun. I am not a big fan of the glock though

I'll start off by saying I'm an absolute huge fan of 1911's, I'm sure it has a lot to do with it being the primary handgun I learned to shoot on as a kid. It certainly is not quite as user friendly as other handguns on the market regarding breaking it down or carrying. Since its single action if you're using it as a carry firearm, most have a round in the chamber with the hammer cocked and safety on...which for some people is a little disconcerting. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference, I own a considerable number of handguns and they all have a grip rake very similar to a 1911 just because thats what feels most comfortable to me. Another big thing about them for me is the trigger, nothing against Glocks, absolutely amazing firearms but for some reason something about the trigger just doesn't do it for me. Absolute same thing with an Hk USP .45 I had, great firearm but the trigger just felt...odd. I will say though, all 1911's are not created equal...brand plays a big factor. If you're going to get one, don't skimp...I've had my Kimber for years and thousands of rounds through it with absolutely zero issues and its as tight as the day I bought it. My buddy has a Para Ordnance that has given him trouble from day one. But if you're in the market definetly get one and if you have any questions would be glad to help.

I have a Colt 1911 Series 70 in 45 ACP that I bought in '81. Got over 13,000 reloaded rounds through it. The problem I ran into with shooting that many rounds through it, is the slide stop will break at the barrel link. Have broken 2 of them. Also the gun is picky on which mags you use. Mine likes the Wilson Combat mags. The surplus mags are junk. Used to carry it when I was plan clothes security, and when I drove armed car. Love the gun. It's now my bed gun. For reloads. I load either a 230gr round nose, or a 200gr semi wadcutter for practice. Both of which I cast myself. But it's normally loaded with Critical Defense.

i have a Kimber Raptor II 1911. I absolutely love this gun. My HK P30L is a great gun that shoots with accuracy and has a great feel, but I would take my Kimber 1911 over it any day of the week. There is something about the weight of the gun and feel of the trigger that I don't think I would find in another gun.

I have 3 1911's. Love them. My class pistol from West Point is a series 80 with my class engraved in the side, I gutted it & replaced all parts but the frame & bbl w/ Ed Brown replacements & that gun will shoot the center out of any target from 5-25 yds. I also have a Kimber Grand Raptor II, beautiful gun, & the best production 1911 on the market, it's right below where you start getting into boutique $$ 1911's: Les Baer, Wilson, Ed Brown. I'd still take my upgraded Colt over the Kimber, it's a little tighter, trigger is a little better, & groups a bit better. But out the box, the Kimber is hard to beat for the $$. I also have high end Sigs, Glocks, S&W, H&K, Ruger, & a Wilson combat modified Beretta 96A1, & still love that Colt.

I have a Glock 26 that fits in my pocket, and I wouldn't trade it for a 1911 dragged behind a jeep :)
