Man I love this truck. I drove up to Cedro Peak to play around some more yesterday. There's three major lines up the steps, I've only ever tried the far right line that I would consider the easiest. I mustered up the courage to give them all a chance yesterday, and damn was I pleasantly surprised. The far left line I was able to walk right up with only the rear locked.
Image
After that I followed the trail on a little ways further looking for trouble. Wound up playing around getting some poser pics flexing in a ditch.
Image
Image
I didn't find anything exciting so I went back and tried the middle line on the steps. The middle line is the steepest, but I had a really nice line picked out. Image
Everything was going well until one of the larger rocks shifted loose and dropped me down on the driveshaft. With all the skid plates this thing has, and I manage to land on one of the only unprotected spots.
Image
Image
I thought about winching up and over to avoid spinning the driveshaft on the rock, but I was able to just stack a couple rocks, lock the front, and walk right up.
Image

So far I haven't felt any vibration from the driveshaft, but I'll be keeping an eye on it. I can't wait to get some bigger tires and sliders on this bad boy.

I would call that shaft toast. Unfortunately, it's aluminum, and you've gouged the tube pretty bad, which will significantly weaken it. However, that was a very nice climb!

Agreed on the shaft being done, only takes seeing a failure under load one time to convince you! Looked like a fun time on the rocks though!

I guess I qualify for the "poser pics" category with mine in the ditch haha too much time at work, not enough in the dez.

I was afraid of that, but it's also something I've been expecting to happen at some point. Gotta find those weak spots. What is the Mob's opinion on replacement options?

Looking good nfb! Nice pics and good to see you putting her through the paces.

Aluminum driveshafts have low weight and inertia giving better engine responsiveness and fuel economy relative to steel. When I had to do a rear shaft I went with a driveshaft specialist 5" aluminum shaft which is much stronger than stock but still very light weight. That being said, if you're going to spend a lot of time in the rocks maybe give tom woods driveshafts a call and get a steel shaft. That'll take way more of a beating.

Thanks! I do plan on playing in the rocks a fair amount, so I'm leaning more towards steel. Which opens up a new bag of questions. Please let me know if I should move this to a seperate post.

1) if I do steel in the rear do I need to front right away, or can I wait a bit?
2) has anyone with the 2013+ trucks done the measurements to replace the rear shaft? I don't mind doing it myself, but if it's already been done, why work harder than I have to?
3) from Tom's site, I'm guessing about $500-600, does that sound about right? Beats the $700-$900 I'm seeing for OEM.

Front is already steel so you won't have to do anything with it. I don't have any idea of measurements or price but good luck and post more awesome pictures!

Went to the local offroad park and shot a few posers pics. This is probably as far offroad as my truck will get but I like knowing it can do this even if it never needs to.

I did pull the front all the way on but the shelf wasn't wide enough to get the whole truck up there. The rear rocker panels would have been close to touching but I'm pretty sure it would have climbed it easily if I had another 5ft. I was just in 4 Low also, no lockers needed

The front tires look like they are on the verge of eating the back of the front fender... you got ample clearance there?

It is close. Think the shadow makes it look closer than it is. It has only rubs on the Thuren control arms at full lock. Now that I have a decent phone (wifes hand me down) ill try to get some flex pics.
And bummer about the drive shaft!!!!!!!!

Oh, that one is I little beyond what I'm comfortable with in my new to me powerwagon. It may have been able to do it but there definitely would have been some damage. I have a Polaris Rzr that's not near as expensive to fix if I want to attempt climbs like that lol
