2006 Front Driveshaft Rebuild

Post by pzoeller » Thu Jul 16, 2020 4:16 pm

I noticed towards the end of the winter that I'd get a vibration from the front driveshaft area if I was in 4wd going more than 40-50kmh. To be honest I'd forgotten all about it until today when I needed 4wd for the first time in months. When I went into 4-high there was a noticeable rotational squeaky (perhaps metal on metal). I used iut as little as possible and everything was fine in 2wd....

I'm assuming the front driveshaft has a u-joint going bad. Figured I'd rebuild all of them while I have it out but I don't see anything written up about it other than Twinstick replacing it with a Napa one.

Does anyone know the part numbers needed? Also any insight on what it takes to rebuild the double cardan?

Thanks

I just rebuilt mine, I have all the P/N's include the center cardigan ball plus the seal. Your squeak and vibration is coming from the ball. Get some light weight oil such as wd-40, and put the tube under the seal and soak it. It will get you by, but you have to change it out soon. It's already damaged so it's not going to hurt it.

Okay, I'll do that right away until I get the parts together.

When you have a minute, would you mind sharing the part numbers and where you got them?

If i understand correctly, I can remove the front driveshaft and still drive the truck without any damage?

Yes, that's how I've been driving mine for some time now since I didn't have the time to work on it until recently. The best solution, to prevent it from putting more strain on the drivetrain, is to remove it.

These trucks can take a lot of very expensive damage from the front cardan letting go, if it’s making a lot of noise (angry birds) safest bet is to take it off until you can rebuild it

So I got the driveshaft out and pressed out all the joints. Found the bad u-joint that had two ends completely dry 😳. Glad it didn't come apart on me.

George at 8lug still the place for spicer joints? Anyone have the part numbers?

And any insight on what gets rebuilt on the double cardan?

Thanks

I think I've sorted out the part numbers off the Spicer site but they don't jive with the ones George told me so now I'm really confused....any chance you've got that list? Thanks

Google on "cardan joint rebuild" there are multiple how to videos out there, if the cardan joint socket has sloppy in it shouldn't be rebuilt the whole thing needs to be replaced.

These are the parts I used in my rebuild. The universals I chose are the sealed, non greasable type. The part numbers can be cross referenced for other brands.

from Amazon:
1x spicer outer cardian ball seal p/n: 2-86-418

from Rock auto and NAPA:
1x cardian ball and inner seal SKF p/n: UJ617
2x universal joints SKF p/n: UJ234
1x universal joint SKF p/n; UJ231

Here are some pictures for referenceImageImage
