Noticed my 2019 universal joints dont have clips 2019?

Post by wvwagon » Mon Mar 30, 2020 5:34 pm

Hello all, i have a 2019 and was under it just looking around and noticed the universal joints dont have clips. They appear to be pinned? Anybody know anything about this? Ive never saw anything like this.

Thanks
Richard

They're glued in. They can be a PITA at times to replace. Replacements will have the clips.

Ok thanks, im assuming the pins just fill the glue hole then. I have never saw anything like that before. Mystery solved.

There are no pins in a u-joint assembly. Rather, what appears to be a pin in there is an injection sprue. When you need to replace them, you melt the plastic and remove the joint, then the new joints use traditional circlips to retain them.

My 07 had the same thing with at least some u-joints, it simplifies manufacturing and saves money for parts suppliers. It does not affect longevity but as mentioned rebuilding them is a pain.

Most of OEM joints have been like that for a long time. I know GM was doing this back in the 90's or even earlier.

I think they inject what seems to be nylon in there. You heat them with a rosebud until it squirts out the injection hole, then press them out.

The yokes should still have grooves for snap rings to hold replacement joints.
