NV271 Noise
NV271 Noise
I was in 4 Hi today, very cold and snowy here in south west Montana, and I noticed that my T-case is fairly noisy. I’m still getting familiar with this truck (11’ PW), it shifts into low range and hi range just fine, but there does seem to be a little more T-case noise than I’m used to in hi range over say 15 or 20 mph. The truck only has 32,000 miles on it and had the T-case fluid changed at 23,000 miles..

Re: NV271 Noise
Your TC is chain driven in 4WD.
Re: NV271 Noise
Yes, only in 4wd. As soon as you pop it into 2wd no noise. It could be just the chain I’m hearing/feeling...
Re: NV271 Noise
if you happen to get a warmer day again, try out the 4wd again.
Tcase could be extra noisy with cold Fluid.
AMSOIL will probably fix that right up.

Re: NV271 Noise
the chain is always turning on those models. if your referencing a whine noise then its likely the planetary gear set. common noise. some are louder than others for various reasons.
Re: NV271 Noise
It is a whine noise, thanks for the info.
Re: NV271 Noise
i wouldnt worry unless its extremely loud but a whine is typical of plenetary gears or most any spur type of gear. automatic trannys do it also if you listen close. i have a older toyota which has very little sound deadening of the interior and you can clearly hear the planetary gear whine especially in first gear. sounds exactly like tcase. most newer trucks may not hear the whine because the cabs have much better sound eliminating materials. i can faintly hear it on my 18 pw. 96 dakota i could hear it easily
Re: NV271 Noise
Good info. I’ve never noticed it in my other 4x4s as much as I do in the PW. The more I listen to it the more normal is sounds. The NV271 is a monster of a T-Case, so I can imagine that would contribute to the overall noise.
