Transfer case swap

Post by SpeedracerPW » Fri Mar 15, 2019 1:31 pm

I've researched this and haven't found much information. Is it possible to swap the NV241 OR Rock-trac (the 4:1 case in the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon) into a power wagon with the BorgWarner 44-47 transfer case? I know you would need a new rear drive shaft without and slip yolk and possibly a new front with a different length shaft, but are the electronics compatible for a more or less plug and play? Could a harness be made to mate the ram electronics to this transfer case as they are both in Chrysler products? Given the similarities of the 45RFE and the 66RFE, are the output shafts and the mounting flange the same? With all that said, can the NV241 OR Rock-trac handle the power output and towing capability of a Power Wagon? The NV241 have been used in lots of older Dodge trucks with the RFE transmission although, from what I've read, the case on the Rock-trac is significantly different.

The reason for this topic of discussion is, could this be another option instead of re-gearing or as an added gear reduction for off-roading? With the new power wagon having a much lower crawl ratio, this could be an option to level the playing field without a transmission swap or steep axle gears. This seems to be a common swap for lots of jeeps to increase crawl ratio and other companies have done similar swaps for other brand trucks.

Thanks

I swapped one in on my 2nd Gen. bolted right up to my 46RE.

I don't think there any electronics on the 241J. Just an electric speedo output (which my 2nd gen didn't need as it was driven off the rear diff VSS.) I don't recall there bing a gear positon sensor which I assume is what you refer to on electronics. It may be something that could be adopted from the BW unit, not sure. Shifter would work fine but 2H/4H are reversed. Drivelines are easy.

Torque. IT would probably do ok. I broke every other part on my second gen and still have the original 241J I swapped in for a broken 231DHD. Include a dozen dana 70 shafts. However, for towing and such, it's probably a little over the job. The 241D was used in CTD powered 2500/3500s so you would likely be ok, but guessing it's not as strong as 44-47 or obviously the 271/273s.

Hummer H1 (Humvee) used the 242 which was the same strength rating as the 241 from NVG so it's definitely not super weak or anything.

Thanks for the quick responses and good information. I'll have to investigate the jeep forums.

One of the most successful LS Jeep conversion guys is here in Las Vegas(Motech). For the Chevy swap the Rubicon T-case doesn't work but his opinion is that with a modern 6 or 8 speed and V8 torque it isn't needed. Quite a few guys even have to change there R+Ps to a taller ratio afterwards.

I realize we are heavier and the 6 speed doesn't have a low 1st gear so it is apples to oranges.

Rubi trux in Boone NC are dropping 6.4 hemi with the new 8 speed truck trans and using the factory rubicon Jeep 4 to 1 transfer case in jeep JLU and gladiator and running 40,s and 60 axles. They also usually have a ram or two there also. They might be a good source of info.
