11.5 swap
I’ve been searching quite a bit and haven’t found a good write up. I’d really like to find good info on years of 11.5 interchange, and if there were any differences by year, from 3/4 ctd or 1 ton, man/auto, or 2wd vs 4wd, trim packages?
I realize there probably isn’t a whole lot to it, but I’d rather know more than I need to before I get started. Sounds like shortening the drive shaft is the only issue.
Are there common problems to check when buying from private party?
I’d really like to get my hands on a 11.5 tracrite gtl. Is it possible?
I have an 06 PW auto. I really want to end up on 37’s but refuse to do it until I can swap to a lower axle ratio.

Re: 11.5 swap
I don't think you'll find an 11.5" TracRite GTL unless it's out of a 2014+ Power Wagon, and then it will have axle mounts for the coil spring rear suspension on it that you would need to cut off.
I think the strategy most take when doing an 11.5" swap on 3G and pre-2014 4G trucks is to get an axle from a CTD and add a mechanical or air locker.

Agree. I've had this thought too. Using a 14+ PW 11.5 with leaf spring mounts to get to 5.13 gears.Low_Sky wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 1:36 pmI don't think you'll find an 11.5" TracRite GTL unless it's out of a 2014+ Power Wagon, and then it will have axle mounts for the coil spring rear suspension on it that you would need to cut off.

11.5 rear out of a '13 and older Cummins and a E-Locker from a '14+ PW. You'll have to regear the axle but it should all bolt up.

No, the carrier is the same. I'm using gears from 2012 C&C 11.5 in my '14+ 11.5.RustyPW wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:19 pmWould be any difference inside the pumpkin for using the e-locker?Reloaderguy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 9:20 pm11.5 rear out of a '13 and older Cummins and a E-Locker from a '14+ PW. Re: 11.5 swap
The 4.56's in the 06 have no issue with 37's. I ran 37's for years to include towing cross country several times with zero issues...just food for thoughtGypsysmith wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 11:05 amI’ve been searching quite a bit and haven’t found a good write up. Re: 11.5 swap
Yes, you'd have to drill a hole for the locker wires to pass though. No welding or machining though. If I needed deeper gears in a 3rd or early 4th Gen this is the route I'd go. 11.5 Cummins axles are very common and you should be able to do the swap in an afternoon.RustyPW wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 11:22 pmI was thinking more like the housing it's self. Re: 11.5 swap
I swapped my 2006 to a 11.5. Had to shorten the rear driveshaft around 2". You will also have to use the U bolts from the 11.5 since the axle tubes are larger. Other then that, pretty simple swap

Re: 11.5 swap
In our 06 when we went to 40's I decided that we needed more gear. I swapped a 11.5 into our truck with 5.38's and an ARB and it has worked great. The only change to install the axle was the shorter driveshaft. With the gears and the 40's the truck drives better than stock.

Re: 11.5 swap
For what its worth, I have an 07 with the auto trans, OEM 4.56 gears and 37s. I've had no problems, the truck is still plenty quick(relatively) and fuel economy is still decent.
When I bought my 98 Grand Cherokee last fall I towed it back home on a U-HAUL car hauler (about 5500-5800lbs total) at 55MPH for about 3-hours, with a bed full of parts and 4 people in the cab. Truck towed it flawlessly, RPM's climbed above 2K only a couple of times.
