Rear dif issue?

Post by 13powerwagon » Sun Dec 30, 2018 7:14 pm

I have started noticing what can best be described as a binding or popping feeling coming from the rear of the truck when turning in 2wd from a stop. It happens just as I let off the brake and start to roll forward with the wheel turned about 3/4 turn either direction. If I don’t let all the way off the brake and keep the wheel turned 3/4 it will continue to bind or pop or whatever it’s doing until I let off the brake all the way. It makes no noise to speak of but It can be felt in the seat, floor and the door but not the steering wheel. I Inspected the internals of the rear dif and changed the fluid and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. All the u-joints are good as well. The truck is a 13 with 101k miles. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas?

Check your front axle u-joints.

Check your front axle u-joints.
Checked those and the drive shafts as well, they all appear to be in good shape with no signs of failure.

Sounds like front u-joints. The only way to inspect them for sure is basically to replace them. Not a bad job and not very expensive. You could remove the shafts and rotate them by hand and that might tell you if there’s a problem.

Yup; T-case in neutral and see if there's any slop in the u-joints.
Been there, done that.

I appreciate the advice guys, maybe I can use this as an excuse to upgrade to RCV axles :D

I think the stock shafts with Spicer joints are a great combo. They’re very tough. I think I paid $35 per joint when I did mine? With 180,000 miles on them and one joint still good I think that’s a solid part to keep.

Thats good to know, because as much as I would like to have the RCVs, its hard to justify the cost in my situation. So ill be going with the spicer joints as well.
