PW stalls after refueling

Post by RustyPW » Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:31 pm

Have a issue with my PW stalling out after filling up the fuel tank. Doesn't happen all the time. Pull into a station. Fill the tank up. Start the PW and start to leave. After about 1.5 minutes of running. The PW will stall out. It will take 2 tries with the key to restart. Once started. It runs fine. No CEL. Don't know if any codes are stored. Thinking it maybe Evap related.

Might be early signs of a fuel pump issue. Fuel pumps are cooled by the gasoline in the tank - big change in fuel temp in the tank.

I thought of that already. I keep my tank at least half full. Have to see if removing the gas cap has anything to do with it.

Yes. Remove the cap and reinstall without fueling up, and see if the same issue occurs.

I had to replace my fuel pump over the summer no sign of any problems beforehand I pulled up to a traffic signal and it just stopped, no lights, codes nothing. Do yourself a favor and replace it before it dies, only use a Mopar pump rockauto.com has the best price.

Out of curiosity, why a different part for reg cab or quad cab? Different tank size/depth?

My fuel pump gave me one weird warning of slight difficulty starting before driving down the street to get gas. It never started again after I got gas in it. That was very confusing to figure out, having died in front of the pump with a fresh tank of gas, led to several new suspects when it ended up being the pump.

Don’t fill your gas tank with 35 gallons immediately before needing to drop it out of the truck if you can...

This issue I'm having started in the early summer. It's happened about 4 times so far. So it's not temp related.

It's great that fuel pumps often give you several warnings of impending doom.
You can replace it at your convenience now
Or wait till it finally shits the bed when you don't have cell service, after dark, on an interstate in Montana, on Sunday, 40 miles from the nearest town with a garage - like happened to me once. Hey - it restarted after a few attempts on 10 different occasions - UNTIL THIS TIME

Oh that is funny. Has anyone ever had a fuel pump fail when the tank was low? I believe this is in the Murpheys Law Book.

I had 1/4 tank of gas in mine when the pump failed and it still was very heavy I can't imagine dropping the tank when it's full.

Nutty thing is, my 1996 Montero has a drain plug, lol imagine that.( all Monteros did) To boot you don't even have to go that far, it has a hatch under the cargo area to access the fuel pump. Now was that so hard?

Sounds fuel pumpy to me. Could be evap, or a gas cap issue.
On dirtmobiles, there's a check valve (usually just a wiggle-ball sorta deal) in the cap, if that sticks/gums up then the tank will create a vacuum and the bike stalls when it can't get fuel. Pop the gas cap, if you hear a suction sound it might be a similar issue.

Usually easier to rattle off the bolts that hold the bed on and slide it over on the frame, than it is to drop all the skid plates/hangers/etc and drop the tank.

Shop that I had do the fuel pump decided the easy way to drain the tank was to punch a hole in the tank with their lift. Don't be like them.

did you fill up at a station that you frequent or rarely? maybe never?

Filled my 18 at a station that i have never filled prior, a not so great looking sunoco. But i used 93....i guess people dont use 93 in shit stations.

The truck has been giving me issues since. It threw crankshaft position sensor codes and stalled multiple times in D and when switching D/R/P .

got it down to 50% tank, filled with known quality fuel(my local Chevron) filled with Lucas fuel additive, and octane booster.
It wont stall now, but i still think its running shitty.

I have a 2018 Power Wagon and for the third time now the truck has left me stranded with a cranks but no start issue. The first time the fuel pump was replaced but the issue was traced back to a loose ground. The second time was a bad fuel pump. Last night it died again less than 1000 miles after the fuel pump was changed out. Its at the dealer being diagnosed now. I try not to go below 1/4 tank.
