Yes, I agree. Very neat to watch. I am really intrigued to see the results of the next episode, with actual diff temps for each scenario.

Re: Diff Temp video
I was wondering about my RockCrusher diff covers. Found some pictures when I installed them. I can see the higher fill hole. The inside shape is close the the factory. Just changed the fluids in both diffs back in June. 3 qts in the front and 6 qts in the rear. Thinking on taking some out.

Re: Diff Temp video
I think you will see banks come out with a new cover, extra capacity and finned but with a windage tray inside to keep the oil flow directed along the ring gear.
Not much doubt that a finned cover reduces temps, but the flow of the oil could be much smoother.

Re: Diff Temp video
First off, I think we all know that soon after, he will offer his solution to this age old issue.
Diff temp does seem to be more of an issue these days, because of the electronic lockers (and the plastic parts used in them that are exposed to the hot fluid) that are available these days, not just in Power Wagons either.
Second, I do enjoy his vids, but honestly, you still can't see how much oil is or is not being slung onto the pinion gear or its bearings. I would sure like someone to explain why there have been so many "pinion bearing failures due to lack of lubrication" if the factory fill level and diff cover is the "better/best way to go", because i am at a loss for any other explanation.
My rear locker issue was with the stock cover. If I would have had my Mag-Hytec on, no doubt that they would have blamed me/it & void the warranty.

Re: Diff Temp video
Based on the videos so far, it seems that the only way to go would be an actual diff oil cooler with hoses & a electric pump.
And, doing that, in and of itself, presents another whole host of issues specifically for us Power Wagon owners.
1) If that pump fails, your f***ed, it runs every time the truck runs.
2) If the hoses get snagged on anything, your f***ed.
3) Where to mount if spare tire is in it's stock location ?
4) How do all those 90 degree bends in hose fittings affect oil flow ?
5) How much more oil do you need in the diff to keep the oil at the proper level while driving it down the road ?
6) Can the pump run dry with no issues ?---Like when slowly going down a long steep hill off-road ?

Re: Diff Temp video
You could drive the pump off the ring gear. Not sure that is a good idea. but it's right there. The issue that a damaged hose/radiator empties the diff is a problem. But you can use SS piping vs hoses and can shield anything with careful design and enough metal. Whether it makes any sense to go to that effort is another question.

Re: Diff Temp video
I love these problems. The problem isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
So now we can all mind fuck a solution until we give up and agree there isn’t a problem that needs solving. But Gale told us there wasn’t a solution... so we had to mind fuck it to find a solution to the lack of a problem.
lol

Maybe after this series, he will come out with some video's that say low gearing is just a waste of money too ?

Re: Diff Temp video
I did a fluid service on an old Chevy 12 bolt LSD this week and thanks to this video series by Banks, I couldn't help but notice the unique shape of the factory cover. It has a channel formed into it to help direct oil to the axle tubes, increasing lubrication to the axle shaft and carrier bearings. I've serviced a lot of diffs in my day, but never paid attention to this feature before.

Re: Diff Temp video
And ?????
I see the stock cover has a "channel" for the oil, but our diff housing/axle does not have any holes in it (see white arrows in post by retired BLM rig , pic #3) to redirect/help send oil to the axle tubes, which is what i meant when i said "I don't think ours have anything like that."
Does it ?

I guess it might be true, what my wife says...........I must be speaking a different language sometimes. I can ask her---what I think---is a simple yes or no question, but she just can't answer like that. She has to give me this big long drawn out response, that makes me forget what my original question was, & somehow, it's all my fault !!!

Re: Diff Temp video
Now let's see a comparison between his good ram air diff cover and the OE aluminum finned cover. It seems very strange that Gale spent so much time disproving the aftermarket covers but skipped the factory aluminum cooling cover.
