2012 vs 2019

So while the wife was out doing some “Shop Small/Local Saturday” I decided to go for a drive, and found myself at the local Lithia Dodge (it was shop local after all). I knew they had a 2019 that stickered for $64,000 that was marked down to around $58,000. Of course it has leather, the 50” flatscreen plasma HD TV, and a ton of other options (no Rambox or front camera). I walked around the truck for a while, then parked my truck next to it to see them side by side. I have no doubt the new Wagon is one hell of a truck, but I just don’t see my truck plus another $30,000 plus to own it. I know the 6.4L has more power, and the 8spd auto sounds great. I’m also aware that the interior is much nicer than mine but man, these trucks are expensive! I think I’ll just hang on to my 2012 with 60,000 miles for a while. I like the idea of no truck payments.

I traded a 16 on a 19. Big difference in the two, IMHO. I hated the trans in the 16 so it was worth it to me.

I feel lucky, the sticker on our Laramie was 59k and it was a dealer loaner for about 9 months. When we bought it, it was 42k I think. I forget now it's been awhile.

But when we bought my Jeep JL here, I went hunting for the same thing. Something that was barely owned at all, but took the depreciation hit. We paid 12k less than the first person who owned it paid for only 300 miles on the odo. Score.

I’d love to have a new Wrangler as a daily driver, but I just don’t fit comfortably in them. At 6’8” the Wrangler just doesn’t have enough leg room.

When we bought it, I came home and took all the doors and roof off all summer. Now that it's colder I put everything back on and I said to my wife "This thing feels cramped now"

I have a 2012 and I think about the same thing sometime. However, I really don't care for some of the overboard technology stuff they put in the new ones. I have been really happy with my rig, and I hope to have it for a long time. Also, the new ones have that crappy dial shift knob, and I hated that when I briefly owned a 1500. I was very disappointed they put that in the new 2500 models, and I will never have to live with that annoyance on mine. I would take the 8 speed if they could give it to me and the 6.4. Oh well, always something to shoot for.

When Ram can get the Power Wagon's lockers to engage in a reasonable time without having to dance all over the road, I might. Until then I'll keep my 2012 for a few more years, and then I'll shop the entire full size market to see what fits my needs best. Might be a Power Wagon, might be a Ford Tremor, might even be a Ram Rebel TRX. Only time will tell.

I am really curious, the 2019 design is very different. One button locks both for instance. So far I have not heard any complaints. But will be interesting to see if they finally addressed it.

There's really no difference other than they replaced the knob with buttons. You get a button for rear and one for both, just like the knob which had rear/both positions.

Not much to it. You turn the knob to lock the diff, in low, sitting still preferably. If it does not lock after 10 miles of going back and forth in and out trying everything under the sun...and every owner, every automotive testers struggles to ever lock the front, to the point owners are installing over ride boxes just to make the lockers work....Thats a relentless design flaw, not operator error. Funny how with the over ride box they work PERFECTLY. The truth is VERY FEW use there front locker, and don't need it and never know the front locker design flaw is a thing. Most owners never use there winch, I have used mine 100s of times.

I think a lot of people have no idea that the lockers will not attempt to engage above 3mph (that's engagement speed, not speed you can drive once locked). I exercise my front locker regularly. Staying below 3 mph and getting the differential wheel speed required to line things up (unless your front axle traction is compromised) can be tough. If I am S-turning on on trail to test it, it gets frustrating fast. If I am actually going over something, it seems to lock pretty readily.

My gearshift handle blocks my locker lights. On two occasions, I have come out of technical sections fully locked and forgotten to un-lock when appropriate. One time I realized it while airing-up. One time my son noticed the flashing locker lights as I drove down the road. Maybe, I need the nannies.

If it matters, my truck is an '18.

This could very well be, and maybe I’m guilty of user error. If somebody has a video of engaging the lockers in stock form (no bypass or Nannie avoiders) please post it. My issues could be me.

Against my better judgement I went and drove a 2020 Power Wagon today. Man the interior is worlds better than my 2012! The 8spd auto mated to the 6.4L is smooth, and the truck felt great. It was like driving a refined version of my truck. I’m not sure it’s $35,000 nicer than my truck, but I was impressed with how the truck rode and drove.

If I had a 2012 I'd upgrade. But it's not a huge upgrade from a 2015. Not yet anyways. They need to update that cab.

I’m not making any change until Ram reveals the Ram Rebel TRX later this year with the Hellcat motor. That truck could have huge potential.

This could very well be, and maybe I’m guilty of user error. If somebody has a video of engaging the lockers in stock form (no bypass or Nannie avoiders) please post it. My issues could be me.

It's not you. I usually am able to get my lockers to lock "somewhat" quickly by turning sharp and hitting the gas a bit. If no, put in reverse, turn sharp the opposite direction and give it a little gas. Repeat as necessary. I've never failed to get them to engage, but occasionally it takes more effort than I like. I did notice on my previous 2013 Power Wagon that they engaged easier as the number of off road trips increased.

I've also noticed the lockers kicking in a bit quicker when rolling through some rough terrain.

I'm 99.9% sure Ram will have it setup to thrash the Craptor. We know the engine will for sure...!
