i dont know about anyone else but if it wasnt for gen4 wagons i wouldnt bother owning a full size truck. for entertainment i visited some local ford and chevy dealers ( when theyre closed of course so i dont get mistaken for a interested customer ), so i could have a look at the running gear. maybe its just me but the ram looks alot more beefy in all aspects. fords front linkages and joints look like something from the older 5k lb rated axles. kinda flimsy in appearance. chevy has what appeared to be aluminum front pumpkin and 1/2 ton sized ujoints and tie rods that are likely no bigger than the ones on my carolla and the under carriage ground clearance is shameful

Haha! I'm just picturing the situation where the local deputy rolls by seeing a flashlight under the pickups in the stealership.... "whatcha doin son?"..."Uhhhh just checkin the pumpkin and ground clearance I swear"

everyone talks about the d60 but im not all that impressed with what i seen. i guess the huge after market support must be nice but other wise ill stick with the electric cad aam. and fords using some wonky steering stabilizer setup that puts it clear up on the draglink near the pitman arm. brilliant :roll:

I've read where cheby 1/2T and 3/4T 4x4's use the same front running gear. The pumpkins, axles, etc. The only difference is in the wheel bolt pattern. 6 vs 8. I don't know how true that is.

Well, the mechanic who now does most of the work on my PW drives a new F350 diesel and he claims his front and rear e-lockers work first time, every time. Wish I could say that for my PW.

i wouldnt be suprised. a guy at work broke the front ujoints on 2 never chevy gas trucks. back in the day when dodge was using d60 and 70 and 80 , chevy had little semi floating rear axles on the 8800gvw trucks

mine work at the drop of a hat also. blm rig bypass makes it all possible :rockon: . honestly i like the look of new fords but thats where it ends for me. cant stand the interiors and i much prefer the ram running gear. fords also dealing with a huge death wobble problem on the new models. no thanks. im perfectly happy with the wagon

Everything is different on the front end between the GM 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks, there is no carry over that I know of except for possibly the steering rack if anything.

As far as GM's front ends, if all you're doing is towing, using it as a stock height work truck, or otherwise driving it as it was intended, you won't beat it for handling, control, or comfort. They just don't handle abuse as well, or obviously perform off road well enough to compare to solid axle rigs. Since you can't go buy a new diesel truck with a stick anymore from any manufacturer, if I were to buy a tow pig, it would be a GM truck every day of the week.

Between Ford and Ram there is no comparison however. I dig the new Super Duty's but they do not have the same "overbuilt" mantra Ram seems to have.

you can go to the ford forum and see the joints on them new trucks are failing with less than 30k mi of just highway miles. hell my corrolla was at nearly 200k with perfectly tight original joints and it traveled the same highways

Well what the heck is wrong with getting the steering stabilizer up and out of harms way? I think thats a great idea, as long as it still functions as it should.

if your trying to stabilize or dampen wheel movement, isnt the most effective location at the exact spot your stabilizing ? like what ram has done. not 2 feet away on the drag link. and if the lower drag link joint develops slop, the ss becomes even more less affective. rams is behind the tie rod. any frontal impact is likely to hit the tie rod first. in which you may have bigger problems to deal with

theres no doubt in my mind the gm is best suited for luxury highway towing and im sure thats what the engineers were shooting for

Then you throw in the price! I got a SoCal dealer to match Dennis Dillon's price in Idaho. My Mom lives in Libby MT, I would've just picked one up while visiting if they didn't... I bought it on the last day of August, 2017 so maybe it helped them with a sales bonus... $48.4K for a hell of a pickup. There is no Ford or Chevy I'd rather have, especially at that price point.

As far as comfy towing goes, I'd absolutely rather have the Ram Limited 3500 w/Asin than a GMC, Chevy or Ford. I prefer to drive a truck not a highway cruiser. But then I also prefer a Challenger to a mini van so it's all good! :)

i guess so many of the new ford super duties have developed death wobble that i think some people are trying to file lawsuit against ford. i wonder if the super duty front end is just so weak that the wobble is inevitable ? for curiousity ive been to the local ford dealer checking out the trucks and the front end compibents look far more flimsy than what you would expect to see on a HD truck

235K on my Nissan Titan and never replaced them. Probably needed them badly when I got rid of it though :lol:

It's like comparing our SA Jeep Rubicon to our IFS 4Runnner. Sure the Jeep off roads better, but the 4Runner does everything else better by far.
I drove two of the new 2020 gm 2500 HD's and had it not been for the 18K depreciation of my 19 PW I would have traded.

But they do have front LSD in some...(whatever the Ford version of lsd is called? Positraction?) :wink:

They have it(lsd) on the 2020 Tremor. If that’s what his mechanic is talking about, then he doesn’t know what a locker is.

Re the Ford lockers, all I "know" is what the guy told me. I have no interest in Fords other than to make fun of them.
