4wd shifter moves back when accelerating

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

4wd shifter moves back when accelerating

Post by Lazarus » Sun Jun 23, 2019 9:55 pm

I noticed today on a moderate acceleration my 4wd shifter moved back like 1 or 2 inches. I tested it out and it did it repeatedly. It’s not shifting out of 2wd but the movement seemed significant. I’ve never noticed this before on this truck (2018 with 9k miles), my previous power wagon, or my TJ. Just seemed weird to me that there’s so much movement on acceleration and while braking as well. I checked the linkage and everything seems tight. Anyone ever noticed this on theirs? Is this normal?

Normal on 95% of all 4wds... Motor mounts and transmission mounts have that much compounded movement.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Does it on my 2015 as well. I've had zero issues, other than the occasional recall (of which we get plenty) so I assume it is normal.

Does it on my 2005 and 2019. Nothing to worry about.

Only time to worry is when it moves with no resistance. Then it is time to replace the shift linkage :)

Well actually the mounts for the transmission/TC and probably also the motor mounts. It all move together with the torque and is perfectly normal.

He was talking about the common problem of the rubber bushing on the TC shift arm giving up and dropping the linkage out of the truck. But otherwise, normal movement. You just never looked down!

Torque imparted on driveline from engine. Mine does it too.
