Summer Gas

Post by FordyceCreekTrail » Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:50 pm

Ok, one more for today. Today my gas mileage went up 2MPG basically. I am sure its summer gas, first tank. I amazed by how much that Hemi hates winter gas.

I started running 90 octane Ethanol free in my truck when I'm at my place in WV.
I stop and fill my generator and chainsaw gas cans there every trip, so I said why not? Costs more, but the mileage gain offsets some of that. Plus it's the closest station, so that shaves about 15 miles off a trip if I only need gas.

I wondered if higher octane would gain mileage, but the of set in higher cost....I just could not believe it. Same thing last spring, all the sudden I fill up one morning and get on the road and the MPG meter just starts clicking up as fast as it can. My wifes Fourunner sees barely a .4 MPG difference in the mid teens by comparison.

It's not the octane. It's the fact that the 10% (or more) ethanol is missing from your tank if you're running ethanol free gas. It has a lower energy density than gasoline so you should see some better mileage.

It seem to vary quite a bit by location. It's common near my place in WV. Usually 87 or 92, but the station near me has a sticker that says 89.5, which is good for the 6.4.

You can check this link for stations that sell it in your area.

Nearest station is 90 miles away. I'd burn a half a tank there and back. I'd guess the emissions program in this area is why they won't allow sale of it.

I don't think we have corn gas anywhere in the state. I believe we do import some fuel from the lower 48, but I guess we abstain from the corn stuff for compatibility with the real stuff we refine up here.

Our Sunoco 93 is ethanol free - that's the only gas the Power Wagon has ever seen. Primarily because it's Ethanol Free

I'm not sure there's as much variation in the Higher Octane summer vs winter blends. But, there definitely is with the 87 octane, I see about 2 mpg better with the summer blend in other vehicles...

I try to run ethanol-free in my small engines, and needed a couple gallons a few weeks ago for the roto-tiller. Local price is $22/gallon in 1-gallon cans. It's cheaper in fivers but they were sold out. Nearest non-ethanol pump gas I could find was about 140 miles away. Around here (So Cal), 87 octane pump gas with ethanol is over $4/gallon right now.
