Antifreeze smell

Post by Easttnrhino » Mon Mar 04, 2019 11:14 am

I have a 2017 power wagon that I have smelt antifreeze when you stop truck and walk around the front. Yes the resivor is going down super slow has been to dealer several times for that issue once and several other little stuff I mention smell every time. I have read where others have had same issue, I have looked also for leak must be so small that the heat keeps it cooked off. Does anyone know of a problem with these trucks? Would love to get this resolved hoping doctor turns me loose and I am want to try the electric fan swap but need to get this fixed first might save a warranty headache. Thanks for any help

Ive had the same issue for a few years now with my ‘16. Every now and then I smell a coolant odor, yet cant seem to find the culperit. No drips, no staining. I have a hunch its the water pump. Maybe where the fan shaft goes in.

I was hoping some one would say tell the dealer to see service bulletin such and such while it is still under warranty

My truck was loosing a bit of coolantfor years, no idea where or how, no detectable leaks anywhere. Finally one day I saw a small puddle of coolant on the road, it was a cracked radiator end. Replaced the radiator with an all aluminum one. No more coolant loss.

Take a mirror on a sick and look under the water pump. Around the shaft and the weep hole.

My buddy has a nice quality pressure tester setup that I think I am gonna have him pressure up the system and see what happens.

I have a lifetime warranty with my truck, and it only has 25k miles on it. However, I am not so sure I want to even bother taking it in to the dealer. Too much of a hassle for what its worth I think. Depends on whats wrong I guess, and how much work and cost the repair is. Might just dick with it myself.

Mine has had a fairly strong coolant smell in the front since it was new. Still haven't had to add any coolant for 5 years...

Head gasket is a culprit for sure. Had that issue with a LR Discovery. Always a smell and never any evidence. Definitely curious as others seem to have similar issues.

That's what I though too with my truck loosing coolant for years but it turned out to be a cracked radiator end. Too small to see any leakage, not realy any smell until one day it just got bad enough to leak onto the pavement.

I’ve had the same thing going on. Noticed the reservoirs a little low, and have smelled it. Never seen a puddle or any marks. Weathers been garbage for awhile now, but I’d like to search the radiator end with some soap bubbles.

I've had a coolant leak into the vents from the heating system on other trucks.

Man, I thought I was crazy but I've been smelling it too, and usually when using heating. I've only got about 10k miles on it, so I've kept attributing the smell to other vehicles magically sticking up mine.

Have the smell in my 18. I can see spray on the intake manifold as if the water pump is leaking. Probably from the weep hole...

got a chance to crawl under there. where the lower rad hose connects to the pump had a few dried drops of purple color. after driving it for a few miles there was nothing fresh so maybe its a small leak when cold and dries up after the engine is hot. not really worried but might try rotating the hose clamp and see if that helps

upon closer inspection im 99% sure mines leaking from the spigot where it bolts onto the upper part of the pump, the piece where the upper rad hose plugs in. which then drips down on the lower hose where i initially thought the leak was. cant tell for sure but it looked as if the spigot is sealed to the pump by thin metal gasket possibly. once the fan and shroud are removed it should be easy fix. anyone know of a good site with the parts fishe diagrams so i can see for sure what parts i may need ? 2017 model

anybody removed the neck that houses the thermostat ? after looking at some diagrams it doesnt show any type of gasket or oring. wondering how it seals to the pump

i see now its oring. since it doesnt appear the oring can be purchased seperate , i guess they want you to buy the whole housing. am i understanding that correct ? maybe i could match the oring at a local hose shop. seems rediculous to buy a $75 housing when a $2 oring fails

Mine has had the coolant smell since new. My dealer checked it and couldn't find anything. I don't stress over it.

theres a leak if you can smell it. maybe its just one or two drops but a leak none the less. mine just in the last couple days progressed to a 1"x1" spot on the driveway so its time to fix it

2017 and its leaking past the oring that seals the thermostat housing to the pump. i just spoke to the dealer and the oring cant be purchased seperate. the whole thermo housing has to be bought , thermo is included, which is about $100 for the whole assembly. all that for a $2 oring. brilliant way to gouge the customer. i suppose you could get the oring from a hose shop but i cant leave my truck torn apart more than a day, incase they have to special order it. so it looks like i know what ill be doing this weekend.

Thanks. I will check that location on my truck closely next time I smell it.

Problem is you cant get a thermostat/housing for our trucks right now. At least from what I have been reading. There are dealers with customers trucks just setting there waiting because the part is backordered.

i found a dealer with the housing in stock. if they have more than one ill let you know. since i need to have the truck back together in the same day, im just going to put the new housing on. but since my old housing assembly is nearly new, ill keep it for a spare and just get a new oring from a local shop. hell maybe the oem oring was designed wrong and its not the proper size for the groove. orings are highly reliable from my experience so im stumped how this could be leaking in just 2yrs but maybe its just a fluke
